The state law allows holding both posts, but city official duties make him ineligible. No state action will be taken. removal would be by city officials.
Grand jury issues twenty nine indictments against Globe Bank officials led by President Charles Spalding for embezzlement of state university funds and deposits after insolvency. Bail set at 85 000 for Spalding and 15 000 for each co defendant. Spalding alleges enmity and mismanagement amid testimony before investigators.
Cleveland leaders urge the Republic and State Convention be held in Cleveland. Colonel W. C. Haskell says a strong working delegation at Columbus can win the Central Committee decision. The meeting is set for Monday to organize backing.
Special dispatch reports Henry Darby of White Oak injured in Portsmouth Ohio when his gun exploded. The breech pins penetrated his forehead and pierced the brain as he wandered a mile from the scene. He was a merchant’s son and began talking after the injury before collapse.
In Peewee West Virginia on May 1 a Jackson County operator known as Doc Hyer tried a green goods scam. He lured a local youth to act as partner then planned an ambush with a crowd. Hyer was bound and whipped with green witches and told to leave the locality. He disappeared after the incident.
A waterspout struck the Branders farm house on White Oak Creek near Monticello Tennessee, demolishing the home and killing the farmer, his wife, and one child. Two farm hands upstairs were fatally mangled and died within hours. No other damage reported in the area.
Delaware May 1 Mrs Chas Hughes abducted from riverside while fishing by two men. She was found three days later in an adjoining town in an unconscious state and awoke at 5 o clock in the evening but cannot recall any details of the crime or circumstances.
Wabash Indiana May 1 Three thousand dollars of the city debt was paid today reducing funded obligations from thirty four thousand to thirty one thousand. An increase is planned July 1 when thirteen thousand five hundred dollars of schoolhouse bonds will be issued.
Eureka Kansas reports that Robert Clockston, described as a banished Russian nobleman, died by his own action in his hut outside town. The elderly recluse lived alone for twenty years and was rarely seen outside his dwelling.
Charleston May 1. Owing to a clash between the City Council and the County Court the latter refused to grant liquor licenses in the city and every saloon closed today for an indefinite period.
Louisville May 11. Banker De Winstandley of New Albany was acquitted in Jeffersonville after a twenty minute jury deliberation in a case charging embezzlement from the New Albany Banking Company.
Marquette Michigan reports Harry M Meson a mail clerk between Meckinnaw City and Houghton was arrested on charges of robbing the mails. He is described as a nephew of the former governor Rich of the region.
A heavy rainstorm across Garrard and Laurtown counties caused Sugar Creek to overflow washing away James Wallace barns and lifting his house off its foundation. Mrs. Wallace was rescued by buggy as floods submerged low land damaging crops and destroying fences gates bridges and utility poles. Waterfall rain continued overnight and into the forenoon before stopping around noon.
Ten years after two bonds worth 1000 dollars were stolen from Captain Joseph Schmidt a fire city in Vincennes Indiana, the bonds were presented for payment. City Treasurer Hoffman expressed surprise as Pittsburg Trust Company had sent them to the First National Bank for collection. Chief of Police White seized the bonds as stolen goods and a possession suit is expected.
At a T. J. Harrison Post G A R meeting in Kokomo a committee was appointed to supervise the erection of a memorial hall in the city. After the last soldier dies the hall will become the property of the county.
At 2 o'clock this afternoon Jeff Morrow shot and killed Dr. Sat Seeenee Saeko one and a half miles south of Elkton Kentucky. A brother, Ben Les, was wounded in the incident. Police describe the scene as a fatal shooting with serious injuries to another person.
