Troops endure routine drills as officers face shortages and alleged infighting within the Sixteenth and other regiments. Measles pose spread risk after two Toledo cases. naval reserves debated for Atlantic patrol. Provost rules tighten camp access while Battery B edges toward cavalry service and a crowded parade schedule looms.
Special Dispatch reports Columbus police detain soldiers found out of camp without passes. Captured militiamen are taken to the State House basement, to await company court-martials, amid rumors of political prisons but authorities say they are confined in a guarded large basement with two exits.
Local reports say a record crowd will visit the Columbus and Indianapolis camps today with 25 000 people expected at both sites. Excursions from Ohio and Indiana are offered by Pennsylvania Big Four and B O lines. C H D line runs the sole Indy direct out of town.
Local firms bid to supply the War Department in Washington on Monday for 2,000 drums. Rudolph Wurlitzer Company of our city submitted a bid and has historically supplied Army drums. Bids for shoulder straps, used to carry the drums, were also opened with Pettibone Bros. Company bidding to furnish straps.
Miss Emily Heun daughter of ex Mayor Heun of Elmwood Place received a letter from Adjutant General Axline informing her that her application as a nurse in the army would be filed.
Final authoritative dispatch from Captain Herman states a cavalry unit will soon depart. The message confirms imminent movement and duty reassignment.
Battery B of the Ohio cavalry rejoices as a messenger boy wheels in bearing a telegram that confirms Captain Herman will command a new front line, while Captain Dana's troop is disbanded. The scene at the Armory on Freeman avenue ends weeks of drill and doubt with renewed morale and renewed recruiting efforts.
Local reports claim Captain Herman of Battery B was not given a cavalry commission. An order will transfer him from artillery to cavalry, while Colonel Dana voluntarily gave up raising his proposed troop due to private business. Colonel Kingsley says Dana was not forced out.

Captain F G Peoble of Hartwell resigns from the Robert Mitchell Furniture Company after four years and sails to New York City to lead a company in the New York National Guard. A seventeen year National Guard veteran, he holds medals for officer proficiency and departs amid warm local tributes.

The Colored Regiment Doug Lass League takes a hand as nine Cincinnati companies complete a drill effort tied to a ninth regiment plan. Leaders emphasize unity, discipline, and community support for the project.
Four volunteer companies raised by Colonel Lake to complete the Ninth Ohio Infantry await County Commissioners approval to drill at the Armory. Lake, with Governor's sanction, plans uniformed units soon, while Douglass League factions push a separate colored regiment and deny Lake’s control. The league accuses Irwin of self interest, but Lake’s corps remains ready for assignments and uniforming as soon as officials authorize space and time.
General Order No 2 calls Kleeman's volunteer regiment to report May 1 at 1 30 PM at the Armory on raduas avenue for inspection and parade. After inspection the unit will march along Everett Central Ninth Race Fourth Vine to the Armory and back, led by the regiment band.
The Covington company of Kentucky National Guard held a meeting at the recruiting office with 45 recruits. Captain Shearer was elected captain and Morton N. Gaither as second lieutenant, while W. R. Ludwig and H. B. Hobbs contested the first lieutenant post, Hobbs winning 27 to 24. The unit may be moved to Lexington soon at government expense, and soldiers were advised on blanket and camp equipment by the state. A list of 125 applicants shows 33 rejected after examination.
A Cincinnati driven drive to present a color flag to the First Regiment Ohio Volunteers moves forward with May 14 at the Grand Opera House. An entertainment features Chamber of Commerce Band, a Spain lecture by Mrs Mary Patton Hudson and recitations by Miss Mariann Schaar and Miss Mari an Devereux. Mayor Tafel will present the flag to Colonel Kleeman as donations near seventy five dollars.
In Newark Ohio on April 30 a demonstration marked the departure of Battery G First Artillery. Reaching full wartime strength of 102 men the unit marched from the armory to the depot escorted by brass bands and thousands of supporters. Local Catholic Knights of St John and Grand Army members joined the march through streets festooned with National colors en route to the train.
Frederick Dent is commissioned as colonel in a ceremonial military appointment. The event notes his rank and the formal transfer of duties within the regiment.
