Floods swept numerous towns as swollen rivers burst banks and residents relied on rowboats. Two men drowned when Hireeman’s Bridge on the Mohawk near Schenectady collapsed. Scotia Bridge remains the sole Mohawk crossing toward Tribes Hill. Damage tops $290,000.
Winchester Kentucky March 3 a special term of the circuit court opens with fifteen men charged in the 1912 murder of former Breathitt County Sheriff Edward Callahan. Thomas Davidson the first defendant faces trial alleging complicity in the assassination. A 100 person Bourbon County jury pool was summoned and Mrs Lillian Gross Callahan is ill with typhoid fever while Mrs Tymanda Callahan has remarried Sim Jett.
Dispatches report Villa wires Carranza that Velasco has offered conditional surrender for Torreon. Huerta describes disorderly flights of Constitutionalists and ongoing bloodshed. Rebels and Federals clash around Torreon while Tampico braces for attack.
Findlay attorney George H. Phelps wins an alternative writ of mandamus forcing Governor Hogan to file an ouster suit against Standard Oil and the Ohio subsidiaries or explain in court. He claims the Ohio interests violate antitrust law and continue a US dissolution era cartel. The petition cites Imperial Oil of Canada and Ohio firms linked to Rockefeller conspirators manipulating oil markets.
In Lincoln Nebraska on March 30 the two rival Republican State Committees failed to unite. Both kept separate identities but agreed to call a joint state convention on July 28 in Lincoln and allow the other party to cooperate in the planning. Leaders like Frank M. Currie and Ambrose Epperson urged harmony and a single county convention system to recognize all Republicans.
In the upper house President However is warmly defended by Lewis amid a Panama Canal issue debate. The tolls dispute absorbs attention as lawmakers clash over policy and leadership.
In Washington on March 30 the House prepares for a late vote on repealing the toll exemption for the Panama Canal amid heated debate. President Wilson discusses the crisis with callers as Speaker Clark’s closing speech is anticipated.
Washington March 380. The Department of Justice plans a busy antitrust week under the Sherman act. Actions include a complaint against the so called smelting trust, possible settlement with Metropolitan Tobacco Co of New York, and pursuit of an antitrust action if settlement fails. The Elgin Board of Trade defense will end with a decree in Chicago, and a report on United Gas Improvement Co of Philadelphia is due. Final action on Wanamaker undervaluation is also anticipated. C G Todd leads trust prosecutions and will start drafting the equity bill to dissolve the combine.
Special Cable reports Udine province towns Clau metto and Vitodasio facing vast landslides from river overflow. About 3,000 residents evacuated as fear grows of further slides.
Miss Bertha Herbsleb of Cincinnati jumped from a sanitarium window in Battle Creek. An X ray shows two compound fractures in the lower limbs a broken wrist and a minor spinal fracture. Doctors say internal injuries are absent and recovery remains uncertain for several days as Dr. J H Kellogg attends.
One hundred seventy thousand miners in the Yorkshire pits walked out today seeking a minimum wage. The Miners Federation of Great Britain backs the action and a prolonged confrontation is anticipated.
Albany March 9 The four gunmen sentenced to death for the Rosenthal murder may receive a respite after Becker's second trial. Attorney Kringle filed a petition with the pardon clerk and Governor Glynn hinted at support for a temporary stay, while stating commutation is unlikely. The governor will decide after reviewing the papers.
Bucyrus Ohio March 30 heavy rains push the Sandusky River over its banks prompting fears of a repeat of last year’s flood. City motor boats tested on the river and precautions heightened to protect lives and property against more showers.
Reports from Lexington say Haz Ky and several smaller villages are inundated as the Kentucky River and its tributaries overflow after heavy mountain rains for three days. Streams are out of their banks and towns face rising water.
Columbus reports no flood alarms, Adjutant General Wood says rivers rising but no need for National Guard duty. He has monitored river levels closely and sees no imminent callout for any flood threat.
Charles Gianini seeks an insanity defense to save his sixteen year old son Jean from the electric chair for the murder of Miss Lydia Beecher near Poland New York. District Attorney Farrell presented an alleged confession to the grand jury. Gianini said his son is mentally unbalanced and hired Joseph A Shay as defense counsel.
Hosea Warden and Delano Warden admitted contributing to the delinquency of Hazel Traphagen a 17 year old girl in Columbus Juvenile Court. Judge Black reserved sentence until Saturday. The Wardens are sons of James Warden a prominent Columbus man.
Mrs William Messenger aged 30 died after eating tainted meat in Marion Ohio. Several other family members are ill with the same illness as investigators work to identify the source and prevent further cases.
Cleveland announces a Municipal Psychologist program with a commission to study crime causes and offender treatment in Municipal Court. A district physician will join the effort to study the psychology of crime, with a plan for an observation ward at City Hospital as a municipal psychic laboratory.
In Akron Ohio on March 30 an unidentified demented man shot B and O Railway workers Frank Moran and Jesse Armstrong at Thoward Street Depot. He fled, then wounded himself as a crowd pursued. Moran was hospitalized and may die. Police see no motive.
In Middletown Ohio on March 30 Benjamin Lloyd aged 43 a millwright at the American Rolling Mill died two hours after being struck on the head by flying scale while at work.
In Jefferson City Missouri on March 30 Governor Major refused to pardon James Schrum, preserving a 99-year term for the murder of Mont Hall. The ruling blocks the sheriff from carrying out an execution that had been approved by the State Supreme Court for the murder of Gint Gibson.
Toledo Rail Light Company suffers two legal setbacks in its bid to block a Schreiber three cent fare ordinance. Judge Brough overruled a city petition alteration and Judge Killits refused a temporary injunction, citing lack of federal jurisdiction without a receiver. H L Doherty urged police protection while City Council sent the case to a committee.
Chicago March 30 Special. A committee of women appointed by Mrs. Potter Palmer discussed building a girls club with a spooning parlor to use about $100,000 from World's Fair souvenir sales. Mrs. Palmer supported a lodging house for young women. plans for such an institution are already under way. No decision was reached, but funds will aid women and children.
New York World correspondent John Reed and photographer Robert Dorman report from El Paso on Velasco the Federal commander after Gomez Palacio. They describe a defeated pursuit, wounded killed aboard trains, and Velasco's reputed meltdown as his forces failed to capitalize on battlefield gains.
