Floods from three Mississippi River crevasses threaten Greenville and Yazoo region. Ten thousand workers race to save plantations as water swallows rail lines and towns from Green ville to Vicksburg with fear of a second Johnstown disaster.
The Greenville Mississippi area remains flooded with hopeful signs the town may be saved. Workers move stock and corn to safety while levee breaches near Stops Landing threaten northern areas. Crevasses widen at Deerfield as trains halt along the River road.
Special Dispatch reports at Friars Point Mississippi that a young white girl and a Negro were drowned in Indian Bay country after Walter Martin and a colored oarsman entered the overflow seeking a nurse for his sick wife. The tale ends with the man escaping as the search continues.
A young girl named Annie Robinson was swept away by a current when a skiff overturned. Martin clung to a tree and survived six hours in the water until rescue. At Yazoo levee a large crowd gathered as levees are reinforced under Major Dabney with 3,000 men and many sandbags placed at vulnerable points.
Vicksburg reports multiple levee breaks along the Mississippi side widening rapidly. The Rev. Stewart C. Wright pastor of Epworth M. E. Church with John G. Evans entered Jacob Weber’s saloon after hours and were forcibly expelled by the proprietor. Wright had Weber arrested for alleged law violation.
Gertie Driggs and Elmer Myers were arrested in Dayton Ohio for possessing counterfeiting paraphernalia including ladles and molds. Instruments for forging dollars dated 1880 1881 and 1890 were found buried in a coal shed. They were admitted to bail of 1000 each. Driggs is widow of Nelson Driggs a noted former counterfeiter.
David Johnson, convicted of burglary in Indianapolis, asks for a new trial and bill of exceptions. He objects to detective evidence about a crucible and broken silverware found after his arrest and contends the jury was improperly released without guidance. He proceeds to comment on the evidence and is granted leave to argue his motion.
The Hon. George L. Converse died in Columbus Ohio at age seventy. Born June 4 1827 in Georgesville Franklin County he hailed from a French Huguenot line. A Denison University graduate he studied law and held Ohio prosecutor roles and legislative seats including speaker of the House. He served three terms in Congress as a Randall Democrat.
Twelve men arrived from Montreal and were taken to Liberty Town ship, Ohio, where a large force is cutting heavy ship timber for export. A land tract has been bought by Montreal capitalists and timber shipments will be heavy for several months.
Cannes dispatch reports Mr and Mrs Gladstone beginning their journey back to England today after completing events in the city.
Washington March 30 chairman Dingley and Ways and Means push to enforce new tariff duties before the act becomes law. The plan imposes duties on goods imported after April 15 and before passage, creates a lien, and holds importers retailers and carriers liable for duties. Customs to keep samples and courts to hear and enforce actions.
Dr Samuel G Armour a young physician in Belgian service died of jungle fever last January in Central Africa. He trained at Long Island College Hospital and was known socially and in Brooklyn medical circles. His father Thomas Armour of Millersburg Ohio is mentioned and he is a nephew of Justice Walker of Cleveland Ohio.
In Lexington Kentucky Jailer William B Wilkerson defeated for renomination by 169 votes struck Commonwealths Attorney Edward P Farrell in the left eye damaging his glasses. After the blow Wilkerson drew a revolver declaring it best to kill the attorney but allowed him to depart uninjured.
Paris reports M. Antide Boyer Socialist Deputy was arrested on charges tied to the Panama scandals. Police seize papers at Deputy Naquet residence. Other arrests expected. Newspapers praise govt for avoiding a Republican trap by delaying Inquiry Committee. Deputy Maret ill, house watched.
Thieves ripped open pay boxes for long distance collections in Toledo at the American District Telegraph office Produce Exchange Boody House and Burnett House. Locks were forced with a jimmy and pliars and considerable money was stolen before the last collection hour.
The Oneida State Bank in Oneida Illinois was robbed last night. Entry was through the front door and the safe wrecked with mitroglycerin. About $5,000 was taken. The culprits escaped on a handcar. John Shevlin and George Schoyahn of Chicago were arrested on suspicion. The bank is insured.
Mrs. Boone discovers her daughter Carrie Alice Watt age 21, once engaged to Richard Peed, vanished in August after arriving with a man as Watts. Watt, who later gave birth January 31, was found living in a Chestnut Street boarding house with her child and was reunited with her mother.
Judge James R. Jewells who coined the line politics is hell died in his Main street room opposite the Phenix Hotel this morning at 6 o'clock. He was a notable figure in local politics and the phrase became widely associated with him. Funeral arrangements are pending.
In Columbus Ohio this morning the body of 41 year old Mrs Seludia Miller was found in a barn near Black Lick one mile south of town. Her hired man Frank Mueller suspected of murder was captured eight miles from Black Lick and brought to jail to avert a lynching. The investigation traces the killing to a brutal assault with a pitchfork amid a struggle after a period of disappearance.
Washington C H O March 30 Last week Robert Lucas alias Phil Lucas colored was arrested on a burglary charge and placed in the city prison. This morning the turnkey found Lucas missing from his cell with the padlock and keys gone. Lucas had been assisted.
Trustees of the city Water Works decide to add a filtering plant costing about 500000 dollars. The works will pay for it in about ten years without tax or water rent increases.
In St Paul on March 30 Bertram Farwell seventeen year old son of William T Farwell a Chicago and New York real estate dealer killed himself by shooting through the heart. He was despondent.
Auburn Indiana March 30 Frank R Dills, the fourth DeKalb County conspirator, pleaded guilty before Judge Watkins Huntington and is to serve three years for forgery and conspiracy that robbed the county of over $30000. Prof W H McIntosh ex County Superintendent of Schools and ex Principal was indicted and arrested with a $1000 bond and protests innocence.
New York March 9 The American Tobacco Company announces abandonment of its factor agreement with customers. A circular mailed nationwide cites trust busting investigations and the war on combinations as the reason for the change.
Washington March 30 It is reported Consul General Lee will leave Cuba April 15 and Judge Day of Canton Ohio will succeed him as the new consul general in Havana.
Lloyds agents report the four masted Lord Dufferin and the bark Bankholme missing near Montevideo with 67 crew believed dead. One theory suggests collision. A schooner Charley Hastings is believed lost in Long Island Sound with six aboard. The U S cruiser Yantic ran aground at Port Nueva Palmira on the Uruguay River.
Wiley Lewis chief of the Montgomery gang of alleged thieves and murderers was captured at East Sewell and brought to Charleston amid threats of lynching. Jerry Brown is jailed for assault. police expect twenty more arrests as they reveal a large organized gang with oaths and signals connected to the Cochran murder and ongoing terror in the Fayette coal region.

In Columbus today William Heimlich was acquitted of the murder of Newton Dill. Dill was found with his skull blown off on Dill's farm where Heimlich had a hand in operations.
A massive tornado hit Chandler Oklahoma at 6 pm causing widespread destruction. One hundred fifty people were badly injured and many killed as fires and debris trapped residents. Rescue work faced darkness and ruin as physicians and supplies rushed to the scene.

Dayton Ohio March 30. Officer J J Null tried to arrest John Stamm who drew a revolver and fired at the officer. The weapon was knocked away and taken by Null who then fired three shots wounding Stamm in the left arm as he fled with his sister in law Mrs McIlvaine. Jake Stamm, brother of John, was shot in a similar encounter with Officer Stork a month earlier.
In Marion Ohio on March 30 Prof Edwin H Boone billed as the world’s greatest mind reader discharged his assistant John L Douglas after a 24 hour sleep stunt went awry Douglas glanced around to see if he was watched and was detected leading to the firing at the local performance.
The Hon. John Gowdy, newly appointed Consul General to Paris, arrived in Indianapolis. The Definison House printed its menu in French to honor him, and several politicians called to pay respects. He plans to resign as State Chairman soon with G. F. McCulloch tipped as his successor.
Chicago special report notes C A Hanna nephew of Mark Hanna chosen as cashier of the Chicago Post Office by Postmaster C N Gordon. Hanna arrived from Lincoln Nebraska three months ago. Salary fixed at 2500 dollars per year.
