The Vanderbilt family commits four members to active service as the nation gears for war. Colonel Cornelius Vanderbilt and his son join the Army and Navy families with Harold S. Vanderbilt, a Rear Commodore, and 15 year old William Henry Vanderbilt, a Naval Reserve midshipman, all prepared to defend the flag.

The Interstate Commerce Commission approved higher coal and ore freight rates by Eastern lines as part of a general rise in rates. Coal increases range from 5 to 10 cents per ton for bituminous coal and 10 to 65 cents for coke, with West Virginia and Pennsylvania origins to tidewater and Virginia blast furnaces affected. Effective dates vary: April 1 for some coke and coal shifts, April 16 and April 1 for others.
