Special cable from Manila reports Becave captured and a bridge across the river intact. MacArthur’s troops advance toward Malolos with the American Army resting Tuesday and resuming early today. Noted daring of officers marked the engagements.
In Harrisburg on March 28 anti-Quay Republicans abandoned their favored Quay bloc and voted for Congressman John Dalzell of Pittsburgh. The ballot totals showed Quay 87 Jenks 69 Dalzell 51 among 207 votes with 104 to reach a choice and 46 absent. Antis claim support helps Dalzell while denying any desertions.
Raleigh White of the Twenty second Regiment in the Philippines earned hero status by freeing Private Powers from Filipino forces during a fierce hill assault. White, 20, used a clubbed rifle to create a path to safety, then collapsed wounded amid cheers as he and Powers were evacuated. Meanwhile U S forces push toward Malolos, with gunboats in the Bulacan River and Otis reporting strong condition and spirits among troops.
In Cairo Illinois three men were burned when steam pipes at a city drainage pump ruptured after a belt slipped. Engineer James Tuttle survived wounds to head neck and hands, while two tramps Fred Rofink and Frank Applegate inhaled steam. Rofink died that afternoon and Applegate was not expected to live through the night. all three were said to be residents of Evansville Indiana.
A Manila dispatch reports the insurgent capital shifting from Malolos to San Fernando. Bulacan was burned Tuesday afternoon as the Monadnock shelled Los Pinas south of Manila.
General MacArthur rests his American forces after a three day march through jungle and river into the Marilao area near Manila. Reports say 300 Filipino dead or wounded, 200 captured, and American losses around 48. Kansan, Nebraska, and South Dakota regiments led a river crossing under fire, with officers displaying dauntless daring as Otis and Hale’s brigades pursued the Filipinos toward Malolos and Bocave.
Special Dispatch reports Will Scott a one-armed Negro stabbed Tom Jones white 30 in a Suffolk Va barroom. Jones died within minutes from a severed artery after Scott feigned an embrace then struck with a pocket knife. Scott found at a woman’s house. coroner’s jury adjourned without verdict amid fears of violence.
In Colliersville, Tenn., early today John Gilbert a drug clerk was killed as he opened the store. James F Nevill Albert S Morris and R E Morris used a double barrel shotgun firing once. The trio fled by train to Memphis and were arrested there to be brought back tomorrow. motive ties to Nevill sister.
Michael Shea aged 117 years and 6 months died in Indianapolis on March 28 He was born in Ireland in 1781 and came to America in 1864 He was a blacksmith and once a playmate of Daniel O Connell the great Irish liberator.
John Clune, confined with delirium tremens in the City Hospital, broke from a third floor strong room and jumped three stories to gravel. He escaped uninjured but tremens returned. he was recaptured while walking in the snow in bare feet near the hospital.
Interlaken Switzerland March 28 The famed Beaurivage Hotel is engulfed in flames and its destruction appears inevitable as this dispatch is filed. The blaze threatens the renowned establishment and surrounding area with extensive damage and potential impacts on tourism and local economy.
Kingston Jamaica March 2 The crews of the American fleet on leave rioted over the New York absence from the Santiago battle. Two hours of fighting left Green and Armstead of the Texas badly wounded with severe stomach and side injuries. A Jamaican born man named Johnson who is a Texas crew member stabbed them. he is jailed aboard his ship. The governor met Rear Admiral Samson as calm returned.
Special dispatch reports that in Alkire's Mills Weston West Virginia Oliver Alkire was struck by lightning in bed this morning flames burned his clothes off while his wife beside him escaped injury though Alkire may die from the shock and burns at the scene.
Elmer Dover private secretary to Senator Hanna visited Columbus in a social capacity but locals suspect the trip aimed to gauge the political outlook for the coming Ohio governor race. Dover met Judge Nash and campaign manager John Malloy. Hanna plans a return in about two weeks to engage campaign affairs.
The Wooster University Nomination Committee unanimously agreed to present Rev Samuel Sterling Palmer as successor to President S J Scovel. Palmer, 38, a Wooster alumnus and McCormick Seminary graduate, has led Columbus Presbyterian Church after earlier posts in Sterling Illinois and Oakland. His wife Della of New Cumberland also graduated top of her class.
Joseph Medill will filed in probate court appraising the estate at about 2 million dollars. Daughters Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. McCormick inherit equal shares. Tribune stock is left in trust to Patterson McCormick and Beale with full power to vote manage or sell by majority decision. Heirs may dispose of their interest at death. Bequests of 1000 dollars to Tribune employees.
President McKinley arrives at Washington via special train at 5 PM with Mrs McKinley and the official party. Crowds gathered at stations along the route but few awaited at the Pennsylvania Depot due to uncertain arrival time. The return trip was noted as uneventful with no speeches.
