City commissioners passed ordinances to remove politics from police and fire appointments and promotions. They empower suspensions, outline misdemeanors for dismissal, and set caps on detectives on duty while detailing salaries and staffing.
Judge Caldwell appointed Phil J. Veith cousin of George Veith Newport attorney to the Courthouse Commission succeeding the late Dr. Fret Stine. Herman Gerhardt of Dayton was named Campbell County Jury Commissioner replacing William G. Wharton who declined due to illness.
Robert L Stamper of 406 Isabelle street dozed in a chair at 212 West Fourth street Newport. James Morris and Walter Morris, both of that Newport address, face charges after a purse and a $40 watch vanished. Moonshine found. Walter jailed in Covington, James in Newport. arraignments set.
Mrs Jarusha Hutchison 90 widow of Archibald Hutchison died last night at her daughter Mrs Thomas Walker’s home 2 East Tenth Street where she had lived. She was born in Campbell County and spent her life in the area.
An ad touts Bowles Red Pepper Rub as fast relief for chest tightness congestion and sore muscles. It promises heat that penetrates in minutes and claims to ease colds rheumatism back pain and stiffness. Sold by ALCO Inc at 98 Madison Ave New York.
Mrs. Hutchison dies leaving four daughters and many grandchildren. Daughters reside in Newport Brent Ky Bromley Ky and others. The obituary notes sixteen grandchildren and two or great grandchildren with funeral arrangements not completed.
A Campbell Circuit Court jury awarded J B Heidkamp $200 after deliberating over two hours. Heidkamp, a Clifton Ky former policeman, alleged he was shot in the leg by John M Rachford in November 1924. liability from Fidelity and Deposit Co of Maryland denied. The trial before Judge Caldwell extended past 7 p m. Rachford denied the charge. In a separate Police Court matter, Elmer Jackson and Carl Rom, both Bellevue youths, pleaded guilty to robbing a passerby near Frank Wittenberg. They were bound over to the grand jury under $1,000 bond each.
In Campbell Circuit Court Judge Caldwell granted one divorce and two suits were filed yesterday. Loretta Olverton is granted a divorce from Courtney Wolverton on neglect and abandonment. World War veteran Hadley sues Elizabeth Hadley for cruelty and abandonment alleging bed rest due to wounds and fiscal misconduct. Raymond Smith seeks divorce from Anna Smith and custody of their two children Betty Jane aged 3 and Donald aged 5.

Four Covington youths Rob ert and Walter Webb Alonzo Mason and Wade H Edwards are tried for highway robbery of F A Caldwell paymaster at Booth Memorial Hospital January 25. Judge Applegate presides as 82 veniremen are questioned and five jurors remain uns puzzled as court adjourns.
Liberty Theater presents Compromise with Irene Rich and Clive Brooks today and tomorrow along with a Mack Sennett comedy and a news reel. Friday and Saturday feature The Road to Yesterday by Cecil B. DeMille with Joseph Schildkraut Jetta Gondal Julia Faye and Trixie Friganza. The Adventures of Mazie concludes with Pathe News. Cain Sisters perform as vaudeville closes four days. Kershaw Sisters lead the vaudeville tomorrow. Liberty offers Raga Muffins and Miss Helen Doyle all week.
Covington Rotary Club chose Henry Jenisch George Lang Charles Willenberg John Meyers and William Ryerson as directors at noon meeting held at the Industrial Club. They will meet next Tuesday to elect officers. A $75000 damage suit was filed in federal court by Amy Bradford administratrix of Stowers Bradford against Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for a fatal collision near Vanceburg Ky September 15 1926.
In Washington on February 23 Count Ludwig Salm von Hoogestraeten arrived from Palm Beach hiding from reporters. He used a freight elevator and a fire escape to evade photographers while visiting his son, with his mother present. La Guardia urged a Labor Department inquiry into his immigration status and cited the 1917 law barring aliens likely to become public charges.
The Cincinnati Peace League hosts a March 10 to April 14 lecture series at the Y M C A Canal and Elm detailing causes of war. Speakers include Dr James Heller Prof Warren Thompson Prof Herbert Feis Prof George Hedger Prof S Gale Lowrie and Dr Ralph Reed. Season tickets are $2 or 50 cents per lecture with a cafeteria supper at 6 30 preceding the 7 o clock program.
A series of local court actions includes Miller declaring no property and owing creditors 1026 dollars in Newport. E Ryan of Norwood was dismissed on counterfeit bill charges. Fred Lifton filed the charge. Frank Morgan held to the Federal Grand Jury on whisky possession with 250 dollar bond. Helen Carter and Margaret Snow released on 500 dollar bonds for trial on March 18 for manufacturing and selling beer.
Mrs Elizabeth Blue sues Maurice Blue for divorce at Kenton Circuit Court. She seeks custody of two children, alimony, and a restraining order to bar visits to the home at 223 West Third Street. Also, Mrs Nettie Rowlett of 408 West Seventh Street sues Bruce Rowlett of Winchester Kentucky for divorce on abandonment and requests custody.
Dr. H C Klein Schmidt outlines education driven prenatal and obstetric care using public health nurses, the Little Mother League, healthmobiles and day clinics funded by Sheppard Towner money. Dr. A Graeme Mitchell stresses parent education as key to disease prevention and public health clinics and Babies' Milk Fund support. Otto W. Davis discusses coordination of public health departments to solve shared problems.
Hartford confirms Gerald Chapman is to be executed at Wethersfield Prison for the October 12, 1924 murder during a New Britain robbery. A third reprieve is possible if the governor grants time, with counsel Groehl meeting State's Attorney Alcorn to argue an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. Chapman shows signs of nervous strain amid the delays.
New York report states James A. Stillman contributed substantially to Jay Ward Leeds trust for Florence Leeds's son. Lawyer William M. Sullivan would not disclose the amount, noting a possible 20000 dollar yearly grant and 150000 dollar at age. Final divorce papers may be signed after European travel.
Beniamino Gigli arrived in New York with police protection after a Detroit concert was canceled due to a blackhand note threatening his life. The note accused him of treachery and warned of harm if he sang in Detroit, signed True Son of Italy. Wheeling West Virginia Feb 23 An indictment charging Mrs Jessie Hoge with murder over the death of Nathan Bell a boarder on January 2 1925 was returned by a special grand jury. Mrs Hoge is jailed held without bond Three Bell brothers in Ireland failed at two trials to contest a will leaving a 30000 estate to Hoge. At the second trial counsel claimed Bell died from poison.
