A cyclone in Birmingham Alabama leaves 25 dead and many injured. Rescue teams work through wreckage as homes collapse under intense winds. Dozens are fighting for life amid widespread devastation across the city.
Special Despatch to Commercial Tribune from Greenup Kentucky on March 25 reports Mr. John Holbrook born February 11 1811 and Mrs Elizabeth Guilkey born 1813 living in Greenup County. Married in 1828 at ages 18 and 15 they have eight children four living Colby 89 Edward 65 Grace Stewart 61 and Mary A Taylor 57. The pair opened their doors to travelers and never charged for lodging.
A devastating tornado struck Birmingham Alabama just before 10 am causing 25 deaths including Dr G C Chapman and the wife of Robert J Lowe. The storm ripped a 150 foot wide path from Green Springs to Avondale, damaging St Vincent's Hospital and many negro shanties. Eighteen bodies were recovered by 7 pm and dozens were hospitalized with injuries.
Despatch from Lord Kitchener dated Pretoria March 25 reports Babington's force including Shekleton's column defeating 1500 Boer troops southwest of Ventersdorp and pursuing to Vaals Bank where convoy guns were captured. British losses minimal with 140 prisoners. Chamberlain and Balfour deny land confiscation plans in South Africa.
Lieutenant General Miles reports to Secretary Root that Cubans would accept the Platt amendment after inspecting Cuban forts around Havana. He met Cuban convention delegates and urged patience and adherence to liberal constitutional ideals for Cuba and future prosperity.
Governor Nash will issue the Arbor Day proclamation naming April 23 as Arbor Day. He will urge preservation of song birds as well as trees and a new feature will be incorporated in the proclamation.
James Horn and Daniel Preller died today when a gasoline engine exploded at the Janesville Barbed Wire Works in Janesville Wisconsin. Fire and safety crews investigated the scene and authorities ruled the deaths accidental.
Mrs al Botto and her son Will sign an agreement to settle the Irvin Botto will dispute. The Irvin-McHarry heir receives 13000 in cash plus about 1000 in costs. other legatees cover roughly 16000 in costs. Estate valued around 200000, legatees to receive about seventy cents on the dollar. Will Botto arrives from New York to consider the proposal amid grand jury probes into alleged false swearing connected to Dr Irvin Lindenburger, a beneficiary and son of the late trustee.
In Louisville crowds cheer as Ed Hoffman, charged with murder for killing Charley Callahan who insulted his sister, is arraigned. His cell is filled with flowers and fruit from city women, a defense fund is being organized, and Hoffman's sister lies seriously ill.
Elwood Indiana March 26 Mrs Margaret Brandon aged 56 is granted a divorce from Jonathan Brandon 78 of Frankton after cruel treatment and alleged property acts. The divorce comes on her cross complaint ending their long marriage. Brandon previously won a divorce and $600 from his wife on similar charges but they later reconciled.
Lieutenant Governor of Michigan from 1863 to 1865 and noted lawyer died suddenly at Island View Gull Lake of heart failure aged 71. The passing occurred today at his residence in Kalamazoo area.
London reports quote Chinese Minister Sir Chih Chen urging Britain to press for a Manchurian accord while two secret ties to be signed in St Petersburg and Peking complicate the scene. Japan faces a choice between early war or later fallout as Russia presses its claims.
A British report on China's ability to meet indemnity claims finds annual revenue around $65 million from land and salt taxes and customs. Analysts suggest doubling land tax and tripling salt tax could raise up to $150 million, enabling repayment of loans and indemnity within twenty years.
Berlin reports that German official circulars state Japan's interpretation of the Anglo-German agreement does not affect Germany. They view the matter as unrelated to Germany's position and note that the earlier note will not be altered by Japan's reading of the text.

John Veith of Upper Sandusky aged nearly 100 died from strangulation after choking on meat at dinner. Born in Germany December 16 1801 he lived in the county since 1861. Surviving children Casper Charles Mrs August Biebighauser and Mrs Ottilie Tracht. Funeral arrangements not yet made.
Governor Nash announced that his daughter Mrs Worthington Babcock or Columbus resident Miss Helen Deshler will christen the battleship Ohio at the May 18 launch in San Francisco. If Mrs Babcock is unable to travel Deshler will act as proxy. Deshler is a social favorite and friend of the governor’s late daughter.
Washington, March 25. A War Department cablegram reports Captain William H. Mullay of the Twenty first Infantry died last Saturday at Manila hospital from typhoid fever. Mullay was born in Ohio and appointed to the army from that state.
Toledo March 25. Republican William Vance McMaken, known as Billy, leads the ticket for mayor while Sam Jones fights to hold strength in a city facing tax rises and debts. Labor and liquor groups shift stance. unions split, police ties discussed, and campaign efforts focus on tax questions and factory growth as McMaken possibly vies for 1903 statewide governor support.
Expert audit of Sandusky Water Works accounts shows a ten year shortage of 12782.86 dollars. Ex Secretary W. J. Affleck was arrested and charged with embezzlement as the report was released.
The President named George E. Baldwin of Ohio as Consul of the United States in Nuremburg Bavaria. The appointment was announced in Washington on March 2.
The overdue German steamer Brutus from Scotland to Kiel has been lost with all crew and passengers aboard. The fate of those on board is unknown as rescue attempts are underway or considered.
