Western exits crowded with fear as a mob of nationalist troops attacked foreign compounds in Nanking. American and British warships shelled to protect civilians. consular staffs rescued Americans from Socony Hill and the Standard Oil plant area amid looting and guarded evacuations.
Newark March 24 Mayor W H N Stevens asked what charge he faced when arraigned for bribery tied to traffic light purchases. Judge Wayne Collier testified that the charge was bribery and the mayor replied Which one. Bailiff corroborated the exchange as the trial proceeded toward a jury verdict.
Detroit March 24 Aaron Sapiro's million dollar libel suit against Henry Ford shrinks as 54 libel claims are dropped and wording refiled. Judge Fred M. Raymond orders trial to proceed while ruling on defense requests for time. New names Baruch Marshall Kahn Warburg and Goldman Sachs enter the case via testimony alongside Dearborn Independent editor William J. Cameron.
Col Edward C. Carrington of Chicago was found guilty of disorderly conduct by Magistrate Louis Brodsky in Jefferson Market Court and placed on one year probation. The case stemmed from a February 28 confrontation with his brother Campbell Carrington, a New York man, at the latter's departure from Carrington's former wife. The initial felonious assault charge was reduced. Carrington must stay away from his brother and refrain from further breaches of the peace.
Reports from Nanking describe renewed shelling by Cantonese forces on foreigners at Socony Hill, with British and American landing parties rescuing or evacuating many, including Consul John K. Davis and family. U S vessels were diverted as diplomats warn of potential anti foreign unrest abroad.
Mrs Mamie McGee 30 of Mt. Orab died from stab wounds March 12 at home. Coroner Tyler ruled murder after inquest. Suspects include her husband Louis McGee and Harry Cummings 59 who loaned the knife. Prosecutor Brown County to convene special grand jury.

Sam Tilton a 50 year old farmer was shot and killed after a dispute over a private road with neighbor William Ingham 38. Ingham fled to Chillicothe and surrendered to Ross County authorities. He was returned to McArthur and jailed on murder charges. This marks the sixth murder case Prosecutor W J Jones faces since his election last November.
Sixty eight passengers of the army transport Chateau Thierry were admitted to Letterman General Hospital after docking at San Francisco Presidio. An influenza epidemic aboard the ship, which departed the Panama Canal Zone, caused four deaths. The New York to San Francisco voyage set steamship records, lasting thirteen days.
Clifford Locke, 40, of 514 Beal street, admitted ring activity after a two hour questioning by Baltimore & Ohio Railroad police. He was shot during a failed escape and lies in General Hospital with non serious injuries. A warrant for theft of United States mail was issued by Commissioner Harry N Smith. Federal guards will remain near the prisoner during recovery and visits.
Paris sources say Britain urged Mussolini to back Tirana treaty, creating a Europe balance of power with Italy against France and Yugoslavia. London, Berlin, and Paris advocate impartial inquiry into Italy's Albania protection and Yugoslav mobilization fears. Briand seeks Chamberlain support to revise Tirana, but Italy and Britain resist.
Los Angeles report says the toy riding crop used in an alleged rear attack by film director J. Stuart Blackton was identified as the instrument. Lieut Gerard de Merveaux seeks 25000 damages in Superior Court, describing a three day recovery from blows as Paula Blackton's condition worsened during the incident.
Mrs Ruth Snyder and Henry Judd Gray face trial for the murder of Ruth's husband Albert Snyder in Queens Village. Indicted by a grand jury, they pleaded not guilty as pretrial steps concluded. Ruth expressed hatred for Gray, claiming he pressured her and stating she did not participate in the killing. Lorraine, their nine year old daughter, may visit soon as the mother contends she is ill.
Nathan Goldstein of St. Louis lost his bid for release from a two year conspiracy sentence in the Jack Daniel liquor case. Federal Judge Robert C Baltzell refused the request on March 24 in Indianapolis noting the heart ailment claim.
Edward Maurer 24 a dental student at the Norfolk Building faces a disorderly conduct charge after boasting he would gain admission to Gifts Theater to see The Naked Truth. Police responding to a purse theft report detained a cloaked woman in crowd who revealed she was a man. Authorities say Maurer had no role in the disappearance.
In Havana a new decree bans dice and poker, voiding a prior allowance for dice in bars and restaurants and cards in private clubs. Interior Secretary Zayas Bazan cites neglect of work and families and large male congregations as reasons, despite protests by poker players.
Lieutenant Commander John K. Kneip U S N stationed in San Diego and his 16 year old nephew John Lake were arrested on serious charges after a girl under 16 accused Kneip of assaulting her. Kneip challenged parts of the story as untrue.
In Wellsville Missouri on March 24, a fatal shooting near town left Eugene Williams, 24, a farm hand, dead. The investigation into the homicide was dropped when Williams’s employer and beneficiary of a $10,000 life insurance policy, James Merritt, 42, shot himself and was found in a hayloft at the scheduled inquiry time.
Across the country Chinese sections from the Atlantic to the Pacific faced heavy police protection after a fresh tong conflict inBrooklyn Newark Chicago Manchester Pittsburgh and Cleveland left at least six dead and several wounded. In Chicago two Leong and two Hip Sing members were killed or wounded as authorities sought a peace mediation led by Treasury agent Michael J. Collins.
A Shanghai dispatch to the Daily Express says fighting has begun at Hankow and other Chinese cities between moderate Nationalists and communist extremists. About three hundred agitators, including foreigners, have reached Hankow from Canton and are moving toward Shanghai.
London reports say foreigners were killed and wounded in Nanking amid Boxer era echoes. Government spokesmen condemn the attack and promise punishment for Chinese attackers. Secretary Worthington Evans says another battalion heads to Shanghai and more destroyers were sent from Shanghai.
The United Jewish Social Agencies aided by the Community Chest provide relief health recreation and institutional services to about 25 000 people in Cincinnati.
