James Gayley a United States Steel official sues for divorce in Reno on grounds of desertion. The cross complaint by Mrs. Gayley seeks a decree of divorce, $50,000 alimony, costs, and counsel fees. Judge Orr orders case submitted with testimony transcribed. decision expected Saturday.
Circuit Judge L. J. Fastin permanently enjoined the International Molders' union the local union and individual members from picketing the Berry foundry and the homes of strike breakers. The strike began January 1 with much violence. Damages of 10000 were asked and will be allowed though the amount was not set.
In Columbus Ohio March 24 the Smith bill to cap the tax levy appears likely to become law, while the Alsdorf bill awaits House action. Democrats largely back Smith, with some Republicans opposing. Governor Harmon may veto only an Alsdorf aligned levy cap.
Cleveland dispatch reports Myron T. Herrick and James R. Garfield assailing government extravagance and urging the Republican Party to embrace a new progressive program. They call for tighter control of public affairs, stronger tariff purposes, corporate regulation, and public exposure of business interests.
Miners and operators held a scale committee session in Linton with no contract. George W. Schluedeberg of Western Pennsylvania operators allegedly offered a 5 cent per ton increase if all other miner demands were dropped, a proposal Ohio and Indiana operators and miners reportedly rejected. T. L. Lewis of the mine workers said the possibility of a wage rise remains, with Ohio operators viewed as the main obstacle to a settlement in the city.
Mount Etna erupts violently with ash, cinders, and a lava flow estimated at twenty feet high and fifteen hundred feet wide. The lava breaches vineyards near San Leo and Rinazzo and advances toward Bolpasso, Nicolozzo, and Borelli, as residents flee and tremors shake the area. Twenty new lava vents open, and the meteorological station on the mountain side is destroyed.
The United Mineworkers of America pass a resolution at Central Turner hall to stop drinking Milwaukee beer. Mother Jones addresses the convention urging concern for Milwaukee brewery workers and their striking demand for union recognition and higher wages. Delegates from Indianapolis seek to relocate future conventions to Indianapolis, but receive no hearing due to adjournment.
Mount Hope in West Virginia was devastated by a major fire that destroyed most homes leaving about 2,000 people homeless. Troops and National Guard tents arrived with temporary shelters as the community plans relief efforts. Estimated losses reach 350000 dollars with only 200000 dollars insured.
A large fire at the Hambleton Tanning Company plant in Hambleton, West Virginia, caused an estimated loss of 1 million dollars. The blaze began in the roll room and spread too quickly for the plant and nearby volunteers to fight. About 300 workers were employed at the facility, with some insurance coverage noted.
Ohio probe focuses on D. B. Creamer fire marshal now state treasurer. Vouchers show 1 197 streetcar rides, 83.20 railroad fare, 106.75 board in Columbus, and 258.40 total expenses charged to the state amid questions of necessity and policy. Pittsburg Pennsylvania March 24 John Morin director of public safety offered resignation to Mayor Magee amid a vice crusade. Morin claimed he bore no blame for vice while the mayor urged a goat for the scandal and Morin hesitated to resign. Investigator Wilson praised Morin as decent amid upheaval as court cases unfold involving six men including former council member George B. Anderson who fainted during questioning. Cochrane admitted $600 and $500 in bribes for votes. others faced similar revelations. Former commons council president William Brand began an 18 month sentence for bribery.
In Washington on March 24 Senator Owen urged a consolidated national health department with a cabinet head. He claimed 600000 lives lost annually to ignorance and neglect and 3000000 sick from preventable diseases, urging preventive measures and water and food safeguards. He criticized suppression of San Francisco plague facts and questioned funding and scope for army and navy.
The administration rail road bill with many changes was ordered favorably reported by the House committee on interstate commerce. The panel split along party lines with all Republicans voting yes, including Chairman Mann, while two Democrats opposed and will present a minority report. The measure moves to the Senate for consideration.
Washington March 24 One dollar a day for all old soldiers incapacitated in the service is provided in a bill favorably reported from the house committee on military affairs today by Representative Sherwood of Ohio.
The House approved a pension bill with about 156 million dollars in appropriations. Republicans largely opposed a provision to abolish eighteen pension agencies, but Democrats backed the committee’s recommendations by a 76 to 9 vote. The record notes a partisan clash over the agency closures.
