Frankfort dispatch details a tense ballot for Kentucky’s lawmakers over a Republican nominee. Hunter trails by two votes as bolters back St. John Boyle and others, while Baird leaves his party and faces Democratic jeers.
In Caruthersville Missouri the Mississippi rose and worsened levee breaches. A guard shot a man seen cutting the Arkansas levee and dumped him into the river. The town faces widespread flooding with Gayoso County Courthouse partially submerged and many homes inundated.
Lewis Crotty, inmate of the Union circuit court on murder charges, suffered an epileptic fit at the courthouse steps as deputies brought him in. He has convulsions and the judge delays jury deliberations until his recovery to resume the trial.
William Painter a brakeman from Altoona died at West Penn Hospital after being crushed while trying to hold back a mob at Pittsburgh Union Depot during President McKinley’s visit. He was 28 and among three brakemen on the president’s private car.
In Shelbyville Indiana Phoebe J Fox sues for divorce from Hiram Fox and he faces aggressive intimidation from self described White Caps urging him to quit. A note threatens hanging and flogging if he remains, while the grand jury plans to probe both cases.
The Government Board of Managers of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers met in Washington for its annual session Preparations were made to erect a new branch home at Danville Illinois with an appropriation of 200000 and to distribute funds for homes in twenty six states operating such institutions.
William Leland a real estate dealer formerly of Cleveland attempted suicide at Woodlawn Police Station by hanging from the cell roof with a twisted sheet. Arrested at his own request after claiming he ruined himself by a fraudulent real estate transaction. Doctors fear he will not recover. His father Cyrus B. Leland was General Auditor of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad.
Louis F. Post editorial writer for the Cleveland Recorder was sentenced by Judge Lamson to ten days in jail and a $200 fine plus costs for contempt of court. He was to stand committed until the fine and costs were paid after criticizing the Common Pleas bench and Judge Lamson in an article titled Judicial Autocracy published March 17.
In Lima Ohio on March 23 a quarrel during a craps game led Ben Sanderson to shoot George Benton twice, killing him instantly. Sanderson fled east but was tracked by bloodhounds and caught after a three mile chase. He was bound over to court and jailed.
Memphis reports a 1 foot drop in the river caused by levee failure above the city, while Cairo and Helena rise and threaten relief. Officials caution the change is not decisive though conditions improve overall with fewer lives lost and relief efforts expanding.
The Reorganization Committee of the Columbus Central Street Railroad meets in Cleveland this week with Cincinnati stockholders. They plan to raise capital from 1.5 million to about 8 million and replace bonds with a new issue. An additional 500 thousand in bonds could pay debts and complete the line. no stock assessments will be made.
George McCammon, formerly in charge of the Adams Express depot at Farmersburg Indiana, is being taken to Farmersburg to answer a charge of embezzling 3800 dollars. He was arrested recently at Forney Texas after admitting guilt and is traveling under escort of Special Agent S A Kennedy.
North bound Chicago and Texas Railway engine and four cars plunged when the Big Muddy River bridge at Aldridge failed under pressure. Engineer Joe Forester and Fireman James Anderson drowned as flood waters swept the wreckage.
Governor Bushnell telegram to Mayor W. L. Capp of Memphis praises local generosity aiding flood victims. He offers to send more tents if needed and asks for advice on further assistance.

Clarence Durham aged 18 of Washington Township has been missing since last Wednesday after making a bet with William Pilkington that if Corbett lost to Fitzsimmons he would leave home and not return until asked. Durham's parents urge Pilkington to write him requesting his return. Pilkington says he knows nothing of his whereabouts.
In the Capitol Hotel lobby Frankfort on March 23 ex congressman John D. White struck Hon R. D. Hill amid a long running feud from last fall’s race. White hit Hill below the eye and then on the neck before allies separated them in the crowd.
In Lockport New York on March 23 stonemasons faced a violent clash with about sixty Italian workers after refusing to quit. Sheriff Kinney ordered the Italians to return to cabins but they resisted and were joined by Polish workers. The sheriff and posse fired a volley. three Italian padrones were arrested while twenty five men continued work under guard of deputies.
A meeting in Chicago of the Tennessee Centennial Commission appointed by Governor Tanner elected Ferdinand W. Peck as president Adlai E Stevenson as vice president Alex H Revell Charles P Hitch N C Worthington William P Halliday and Robert J Thompson as officers. The group approved reproducing the Administration Building at 1 6 scale and authorized letting the contract. Peck and Thompson later left for Nashville to select a building site.
The Supreme National Association of the Patrons of Industry gathers in Cleveland with delegates from New York Massachusetts West Virginia Ohio Michigan Indiana Wisconsin and others. Secretary reports 250000 members as the convention forms a committee to determine reforms and grievances. Twenty five delegates attend representing each state.
The body of a 62 year old man identified as George Le Fever was found face down in a shallow Windham Creek near Akron on Sunday. Death remains a mystery with no signs of violence and it is not believed to be self-inflicted.
F N Arnold a locomotive engineers union member and former Railway Commissioner candidate said a published report alleging Governor Bushnell broke faith with the engineers is unfounded. He praised Kayler's appointment as sound and noted he had two-thirds endorsement within the Ohio engineers.
Large crowds gather at the Hazelton wreck site in Princeton Indiana as divers search submerged cars. This afternoon a diver surfaced with a trunk belonging to Milwaukee residents containing diamonds and jewels worth about ten thousand dollars. A mail sack was recovered and another search is planned tonight.
