Destructive storms sweep five states leaving 800 dead and 3,000 injured. Rescue workers battle sickness, burials proceed in De Soto and West Frankfort where nearly forty babies die in a single town. Military guards bar sightseers from stricken areas.
Four men died and five were injured at Maltese Laboratories in New Orleans during a malt and barley products demonstration for a forthcoming opening. Victims include president and chemist Alben Koehler and sales manager Fred Rosenbaum. A boiler was hurled through the building wall. hospital officials say several injured may die.
F M Hewitt of Coeburn Dale, former State Senator, described watching a tornado approach in De Soto Illinois. He and T L Cherry sought safety as houses lifted and debris filled the air, then helped pull the dying and injured from the rubble amid cries of babies and mothers.
Washington officials and the Veterans Bureau investigate Howard T. Lewis who is listed as totally disabled by blindness yet received an automobile drivers permit. Traffic Inspector Hadley verified Lewis drove a policeman in a test as the bureau reviews its records and compensation status.
Washington March 21 The proposed Roosevelt party led by Kermit and Theodore Roosevelt faces a setback as the Viceroy of India refuses to allow use of the Hunza Pass citing insufficient native carriers this year A Swedish expedition has already used the pass and the British government may postpone the venture to next year to spare carriers for other hunts.
New York dispatch reports Colonel Theodore Roosevelt commenting on a rumor that the Viceroy of India refused a permit for this year’s hunting trip. He said no definite decision has been made, with negotiations still in progress.
Chicago dispatch reports Theodore Roosevelt will meet D C Davies director of the Field Museum next Thursday. Davies says the topics will be discussed then and he cannot predict any action at that time.
Jacob Schiller 567 of Richmond Hill, the operator, collapsed in the projection booth during a Jamaica Theater feature. John O Connell alerted hospital and secured another operator as medical staff pronounced heart disease. Spectators waited through a delayed start, unaware of the cause.
Mrs Anthony Joseph Drexel Paul wife of Radnor resident and daughter of Mrs Alexander Williams Biddle faced a severe throat poisoning from cosmetics. Dr Chevalier Jackson operated at Jefferson Hospital to relieve the blockage and restore breathing after two years of illness and recent improvements give cautious hope for recovery.
A minor quake rattled Quebec on March 21 between 10 24 and 10 26 am lasting seconds. It frightened residents in Baie Saint Paul Murray Bay St Simeon Simoilou St Roch Loretteville Charlebois St Sauveur with no injuries and only minor property damage reported.
Georgetown University seismologist recorded a five minute tremor at 10 25 am felt in Quebec. The needle location showed the shock about 600 miles from Washington and described as very slight.

Coroner's report says she was killed and her clothes saturated with kerosene. police suspect binding and strangulation to hide the crime. Her husband and three children survive. divorce talks had recently occurred.
President Coolidge may abstain from attending the June 6 landing celebration in Minneapolis after Senators Norbeck and Shipstead voted against Warren’s confirmation. Skandinaven reports the White House cites the invitation’s origin and the Battle of Bunker Hill events as reasons for possible absence.
Halifax N S March 21 striking miners in the Cape Breton district accept with reservations the government proposal to return to work on the 1924 wage scale and to have a commission appointed under the public inquiry act to investigate mining conditions.
In Calgary Alberta on March 21 one hundred twenty three men left for a 200 mile trek to Edmonton the Alberta capital to demand relief from unemployment. They planned to camp by the Parliament Buildings until their demands were met and had no provisions. Coffee was served before departure.
Stephen F. Sears, an MIT English instructor, died after leaping in front of a subway train. He had been suffering a nervous breakdown believed to be from overwork. Police and hotel staff had prevented an earlier suicide attempt from a fifth story Hotel Essex window.
New York financier Charles W Morse lies unconscious at his home after a paralytic stroke. He is 69 and under constant nursing care as federal indictments proceed against him and his three sons for mail fraud linked to shipbuilding ventures. Morse previously faced prison for misapplication of funds and was pardoned by President Taft in 1912.
In Buffalo on March 21 Justice Philip A. Sullivan granted Mary Doorty Goetz a judgment of separation from Edward H. Goetz and alimony of 12000 dollars a year. The couple married in May 1884 and separated in October 1915 after a long dispute over family expenditures and lavish living. The four children include E. Ray Goetz, Irene Bordoni’s husband, Coleman Goetz, Marie Ethel Goetz the designer, and Dorothy Goetz Berlin, Irving Berlin’s late wife. Justice Sullivan noted Edward Goetz’s estimated fortune at 500000 dollars and blamed the quarrels on excessive spending and extravagant boarding schools for the children. He said the responsibility for the strain rested largely with the defendant, who was nearly crazed by the expense.
Kansas City dispatch reports Harry Wise alias Myers slipped his shackles as eleven federal guards watched on a sleeping car with thirty eight prisoners en route from Detroit to Leavenworth. He vanished when the train halted. Wise, 32, had been convicted of narcotics and sentenced to eighteen months.
James A Crain National Commander of the Legion announced a tribute to General Pershing at the Hippodrome on April 25. Newton D Baker former Secretary of War will deliver a presentation speech and a bronze bust relief of Pershing will be presented.
