A German submarine sank a large French Danton class battleship in the Western Mediterranean on March 19. The ship of 18 028 tons with 681 crew capsized after a heavy hit. Other Danton ships and details about their armament and dimensions follow in the Admiralty report.
Berlin reports the Norwegian steamer Advance, sailing from Rotterdam to London with 200 tons of foodstuffs, has been seized by German forces and towed into Zeebrugge Belgium as a prize of war.
London dispatch says the Norwegian vessel Collingwood of 1942 tons sank on March 12 after the submarine commander gave ten minutes to abandon ship. It also reports the French sailing vessel Jules Gommes of 2595 tons was sunk prior to Collingwood.
The British steamer Brayhead was sunk by a German submarine on March 14. Captain Hoy and seventeen crew members are missing, according to agents in St Johns. The Brayhead departed St Johns for Belfast on March 1.

Washington March 20 The Government War Risk Insurance Bureau says it will broaden its operations and insure practically all contraband for European countries except arms and ammunition. Policies will cover cargos and vessels not American, with premiums and losses noted as Congress funds rise to about 20 million dollars.
In Birmingham area a Sheriff’s posse killed David D. Overton and Tony Malino during a jail break siege after seven inmates overpowered guards at the county jail. One fugitive wounded, others escaped amid heavy gunfire and a long manhunt.
