Turkish forces inflict heavy losses on the Anglo French fleet during a prolonged all day engagement in the Dardanelles. Chinese whispers not present.
Reuters dispatch reports a Russian squadron near the Bosporus amid mounting Allied losses in the Dardanelles. British ships Bouvet Irresistible and Ocean were sunk by floating mines with heavy Turkish fort fire. Bouvet’s crew largely perished after an internal explosion and quick sinking. The battle continued as newer battleships Queen and Implacable prepared to replace sunk vessels, with Inflexible Gaulois and other units striking forts before darkness.
Governor Willis and Republican leaders reject alarm over possible constitutional challenges to the Beitler bill which amends the Warnes law by removing county tax commissioners and shifting duties to county auditors. Legislative leaders say language on emergencies is vague but unlikely to topple the measure. Other bills include Bible reading in schools and longer terms for county clerks. Senate passes Collins bill for Troop C armory appropriation in Cincinnati.
In Dallas on March 19 a German girl aged 19 was cited by Judge E O Meitzen of Hallettsville Texas in testimony on tenant farming. She reportedly earned six dollars a month and could pick 360 pounds of cotton daily while also performing tasks such as wood cutting plowing driving and Sunday cooking. The remark contrasted her labor pace with that of American women.
Special Dispatch reports the convention troops led by General Rosalio Hernandez routed Carranza forces under General Monclovio Herrera at Oregano near Piedras Negras. Prisoners were taken and Herrera’s troops fled toward the Burro Mountains. other Carranzista remnants were routed by Villa near Ramones and retreating toward Camargo before Aldamas fell and Matamoros eyed.
In New York Federal Court Richard Stegler pleaded guilty and was jailed for sixty days in a scheme to obtain a false American passport to England. Two co defendants Madden and Cook received ten months each. The court noted Stegler had told the truth but warned against foreign allegiance.
Former United States Senator Theodore E. Burton of Ohio spoke at a Pan-American Society luncheon in New York on the eve of his South American departure. He said world conditions now allow the United States to lead in civilization and discussed expanding trade with South America and fostering Latin American goodwill.
Werner Horn, charged with illegal interstate transportation of explosives in the Vanceboro bridge incident, will be taken to Boston for trial. Federal Commissioner Charles H. Reid ruled the indictment sufficient and denied the defense bid to release him as a belligerent acting in war.

Nathan Cohen, an emigrant who has wandered between New York and Rio de Janeiro since May 1912, was stranded after multiple deportation refusals. The Hebrew Shelter and Immigrant Aid Society plans alienist tests to decide if he is sane and eligible to re-enter the United States. If found sane, officials will be asked to admit him. if not, he may sail south again.
German Berlin City Council announces withdrawal of prior restrictions on wheat flour in bread. The ruling ends the ban that prevented bread from containing more than 70 percent wheat flour, permitting all wheat bread without penalty.

In Ogden Utah on March 19 Vice President Thomas R Marshall compared today's international scene to the lead up to the War of 1812. He urged peace and noted the era's larger scale conflicts while predicting President Wilson would be renominated by acclamation and re-elected.
London dispatch quotes Athens Reuters correspondent saying the allied fleet blew up a powder magazine in Dardanelles, causing the town to burn. He adds most forts are seriously damaged.
London reports appalling conditions in Armenia with a doctor Derderian saying Alashgerd plain is littered with bodies of men women and children. Kurds attacked after Russian retreat, killing men and abducting women to the mountains. Red Cross fund organizers say 120000 Armenians are destitute in the Caucasus.
In New York on March 19 Supreme Court Justice Bijur said Thaw cannot be sent back to Matteawan for at least a month. Writs of habeas corpus were issued and delays anticipated to push the final hearing to April 19, with Thaw’s counsel planning adjournment tactics.
