A Norfolk and Western Railroad wreck at Ada Virginia kills fireman Van Landingham and brakeman E A Graham and a tramp. Several trainmen are injured as three freight trains crash while traveling east. The first train halted, the second split and its sections struck the first, followed by a third that was not flagged.
The headless body of John Powers a 35 year old metal polisher with a wife and three children was found on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad track near the depot in Mansfield Ohio. Officials suspect foul play though self harm is not ruled out and an investigation continues.
Thomas Carroll Boone telegraph operator in the war balloon near Santiago died at Massachusetts General Hospital after an injury from the fall of the airship. He and two government officers performed heroic work, Boone never fully recovered, born Annapolis 1876, served in Second Massachusetts Volunteers. Interment planned in Annapolis. One officer died. another confined to an insane asylum.
Delaware Ohio March 19 The annual oratorical contest at Ohio Wesleyan University in Gray Chapel drew a large audience. Lawrence Fisher Frank Cherrington F S Kreager L C Marshall and Erwin G Guthrey spoke on topics with Marshall taking first place Cherrington second Guthrey third Judges included Prof J A Shawan Hon W M Day and others The next contest will be between Ohio Wesleyan and Cornell.
In Youngstown Ohio on March 19 ministers from Columbus occupied pulpits in ten churches as the Antisaloon League opened its campaign against Lieutenant Governor Jones now seeking the governorship. A First Presbyterian reading claimed a resolution from the State Liquor Dealers' Association thanked Jones for legislative acts in personal liberty. General Jones said he had nothing to say for now but would comment later.
Mrs. Mary Van Vieck wife of Dr E E Van Vieck seeks a cross bill in Charleston West Virginia asserting infidelity forging her name to checks and inflating sums she gave him to cover wedding expenses including payment for his wedding suit. The dentist husband is a prominent local figure.

John Sherman shows steady improvement but cannot be safely transferred tomorrow to the United States cruiser Chicago amid strong interest in his recovery aboard the Paris.
Major General Otis dispatches from Manila noting improvised gunboats under Captain Grant hold Laguna de Bay with troops and civilians at risk. Wheaton's brigade seizes Pasig River positions driving rebels, with 200 enemy dead and light allied casualties near Morong.
Chicago March 19 Charles L Backman an engineer shot and mortally wounded his wife. He then shot himself in the breast dying instantly. Backman and his wife had been separated for some time after a quarrel over her refusal to live with him.
Ex Senator Patrick Walsh died this morning in Augusta at 7 30. He had served in the Senate and was prominent in state politics. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
Col Jewett, back from the Philippines, says the admiral at 63 shows strain but will stay in Manila Harbor until danger ends. He notes Dewey’s cautious leadership and forethought that aided operations and suggests Otis, McKinley, and Dewey be honored in history.
In York, March 19, Colonel Bryan plans a Jefferson birthday dinner at Dennett's Lunch in Brooklyn to oppose Tammany's feast. Attendees include Altgeld, Pingree, Mayor Jones, and Geo. Fred Williams. The menu is plain with beer and water, price $1 per plate.

Captain Erwin, acting Yellowstone superintendent, reports to the Interior Department that record snowfalls in the park will cause heavy deaths among antelope deer and elk before spring. Snow depths exceed twelve feet in places, preventing animals from reaching food, though buffalo near hot springs fare better.
A 15 year old girl Elizabeth Biddison at the Delaware State Girls Industrial Home develops smallpox despite universal vaccination of the 340 inmates. Cottage No 2 supervises fifty girls. Miss Meek hospitalized. Miss Taylor in charge quarantined. the patient aided by a janitress who touched the matron. Superintendent Styles says precautions taken to prevent spread.
In 1858 a $700 note sparked a Highland County dispute between the late Henry Pavey and Daniel Pavey over mule sales. The case reached the Ohio Supreme Court yesterday with most witnesses long dead, the note claimed as forgery, and heavy court costs inflating the sum.

Columbus March 19 Superintendent J W Jones of the State Institution for the Deaf and Dumb is named as a candidate for president of Ohio University at Athens. The board will fill the vacancy created by President Brooks resignation at its next meeting.
The British cruiser Talbot with the body of Baron Herschell aboard arrived in Portsmouth today after sailing from New York on March 8. The voyage linked the late baron to transatlantic remembrance and naval honors.

A horse on a railroad track near Clipper Gap switch caused a wreck on West-bound Freight Train No. 9. The first engine was ditched and its boiler broken. Engineer Fred Witham and fireman Edward Gray were scalded to death. an unknown helper was badly burned.
