A late night fire at the Windsor Hotel on Milwaukee Street in Milwaukee traps many guests on the third floor. Patrolman Schmitt rescues 20 to 30 guests before being overcome by smoke. About 100 guests were in the hotel with most escaping in night attire as flames spread through the third floor.
In Dayton on March 18 Arthur Bowler aged 3 accidentally shot John James 22 in the back during a quarrel at the Fowler home over James and Fowler's wife. James is hospitalized with little hope of recovery. Fowler was arrested as police say the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving the wife and occurred on a crowded street.
A custody dispute pits a man against others over the care of W. G. Ellio’s children. He allocates about half a million dollars in his bid to secure custody and legal control.
The custody battle over William Cheney Ellis’s children shifts to Joliet after his execution. Akron millionaire J B Looker, Ellis’s lifelong friend, plans to file in Cincinnati to place the children with Mr and Mrs Louis Bierck of 6358 Parnell Avenue, amid opposition from Ellis’s in laws who rely on blood relationship. The unit carries armored automobiles and heavy equipment. Verification on reported action at Escalon Chihuahua is lacking.
The Senate passed the urgent deficiency bill totaling over 10 million dollars with a half million for refugee camps. Senator Lodge defended expenditures for Mexican soldiers and refugees in Texas and California, while Senator Bristow opposed repayment claims.
A March dispatch reports Mayor Mitchell may back a committee plan to extend closing hours for cabarets and tango venues. The panel recommends 2 a.m. closing for well run hotels with entertainment and allows after hours dining in adjoining spaces. A new excise law committee is proposed.
