Nearly 2000 state troops mass for action around Naco and Nogales as federal Ojeda fights retreat. Reports say 450 federal troops were defeated, Yaqui volunteers join the push, and Guilfoyle warns of danger to Americans while nine cavalry units mobilize near the border.
Juan Ochoa Ramos of Mexico, a financier allied with Felix Diaz, arrives in Washington to seek U S recognition of the Tuesta Provisional Government. He met with President Wilson and Secretary Bryan, urging formal U S support to stabilize Mexico and aid permanent peace.
The Senate passed the amnesty bill in Mexico City. President Huerta will sign and enforcement begins within days. The decree covers rebels in rebellion before March 4 amidst reports of General Genevevo De La La attacks at Tlaltizipan and a Federal train dispatched to the Puebla district. General Tracy Aubert reported advancing on Monclova.
Four hundred federals under General Tracy Aubert clashed with about five hundred supporters of Vengestiano Carranza at Potrero near Villaldama. Federals lost twenty five. rebels thirty two. Rebels fled north, federals held Villaldama.
London March 17 The Duke of Marlborough announces plans to plow 1000 acres of meadow on his Blenheim estate as a campaign against proposed nationalization of land. He argues private landlords can run land cheaper and more efficiently and will show higher wages and yields than state administration.
A wireless message from the U S cruiser Colorado reports two hundred constitutionalists approaching Alamo on a branch line of the Southern Pacific near Navajoa in Sonora. Also noted is a federal insurgent defeat at Larura on the Sonora Chihuahua border and the cutting of communications by state troops. Two American linemen repairing lines below Hermosillo were arrested and taken to the state capital.
A Sofid dispatch reports Adrianople’s garrison offering surrender with honors of war and arms kept. Bulgarian forces earlier captured Kartastepe and Papartepe, attacked from northern approaches, and after months of siege the Hellantaria Fort fell on March 31, signaling the end of a remarkable siege in modern history.
A Carranza loyalist force about 200 strong attacked Nuevo Laredo at daybreak, killing a rebel female leader Carta Rivas and causing 20 rebels and 15 Federals to die. About 40 wounded are treated by American doctors and local women. The Fourteenth Cavalry guards the border as both towns skirmish with limited US casualties reported.
Mrs. Phillip Van Valkenburgh files a detailed bill in state court claiming $100,000 spent on living expenses over two years ending June 27 1912. She sues her separated husband for the amount listing items including three trips to Europe hotel bills autos clothing entertainment and restaurant charges physicians dentists and masseurs.
At Hingham Massachusetts on March 17 four witnesses testified in the inquest into Rear Admiral Joseph Giles Eaton’s death. Authorities suggest not natural causes and consider suicide as a possibility while maintaining secrecy. Cleveland Ohio March 7 1912 The Civil Service Commission finds Chief of Police Frederick Kohler guilty of group immorality conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman and conduct subversive to good order and discipline in the Police Department He is discharged Kohler faced charges based on visits to the home of Mrs May Schearer with her husband noting alleged incidents on February May and June 1912 The commission notes Kohler is a poor man and praises his police work He previously faced and was acquitted three years earlier on drunkenness and personal misconduct charges.
Tony Hemmer, 60, custodian at Lake Christine Club near Belleville, was discovered near death by a duck hunter after lying two feet from a telephone for over forty eight hours. He had attempted to call, but could not move. Hemmer described a brutal wait with freezing conditions and relied on his dog for warmth while trapped in the clubhouse.
Thousands of cattle drowned in the Ocmulgee lowlands below Macon as floodwaters reach two to ten feet. The Ocmulgee slowly receded after yesterday morning. One life was lost in Macon and many riverbank families were left homeless.
Ohio lawmakers take up a bill by Rep Louis Capelle to create a Dress Reform Commission to regulate women's fashion in the name of morality. The measure seeks rules for design and manufacture and aims to curb styles deemed detrimental, with an emergency clause to take effect immediately.
