Paris editor Gaston Calmette of The Figaro was shot by Henriette Caillaux, wife of Finance Minister Joseph Caillaux, in a motive of revenge after a bitter press campaign against the minister. She surrendered to police, was charged with homicide, and sent to St Lazare Prison. The minister resigned, pending decision.
Ale Fellows, serving a three year term for embezzlement and forgery at the Columbus penitentiary, was allowed to attend his dying father’s funeral in Galion, returning on time without an escort. The warden had previously approved the trip and stated the inmate’s term ends in April.
In Frankfort on March 16 the Senate prepared for a full day of debate on the Webb state-wide prohibition bill as both chambers log drags toward a final decision. The House passed six measures while the Senate advanced only one. Hue Huffaker’s contract labor bill failed in the House. Webb, leader of prohibition forces, predicted a safe Senate passage and a clear statewide vote if the people support it at the polls.
Dr. J Henry Schroeder of 489 Mitchell avenue Avondale is in serious condition at the Jewish Hospital after a Reading road collision last night. His head injuries are deep and skull fracture cannot be ruled out until morning. Dr. J Louis Ransohoff attends him.
Eva Booth dedicated the Shinkle family mansion at Second and Kennedy streets Covington as a Salvation Army women’s home and training school for girls. Brigadier David Dunham Major Evans and others assisted with services and a tour, noting 8000 girls saved nationwide since the year began.
In Columbus March 16 Prosecutor Turner seeks immediate trials for Democratic State Chairman L Finley and three indicted aides. Defense attorneys seek time to read indictments and file demurrers. Judge Dillon grants a delay. defendants plead not guilty as the January term winds down and the April term looms.
In Glasgow on March 16 Dr. James Devon Prison Commissioner for Scotland was attacked by a suffragette armed with a dog whip. He knocked her down with a left-handed blow and she was arrested but not prosecuted and released. Devon supports forcible feeding and opposes lenient releases for hunger striking suffragettes.
Business leaders renew options on a large rail passenger depot plan south of Lincoln Park west of Freeman avenue. The project aims to place a Freeman avenue entrance with a grand building and may absorb Lincoln Park land. If approved by city officials, it could boost West End real estate and improve streetcar service, with plans centering on Southern roads and nearby depots.
Former Governor Judson Harmon declared he will not seek the Democratic nomination for United States Senator. The Cincinnati story claimed his candidacy and mobilized party leaders against rivals like Hogan Swain and Zimmerman. Harmon spoke in Columbus during a Public Utilities Commission hearing on bonds for the Portsmouth Street Railroad and Light Company.
Reports from Nuevo Laredo state a decisive defeat of a Constitutionalist column en route to Monterey. About 300 rebels killed, large quantities of arms and supplies captured, wagons and 100 pack animals seized. Main line service resumed between Monterey and the border.
Special Dispatch to the Commercial Tribune Philadelphia reports a divided Board of Steamboat Inspectors found Captain Osmyn Berry partly guilty in the collision that killed forty one aboard the steamer Arcomaphtene. One inspector exonerated him, the other guilty and urged license revocation. The case moves to the Department of Commerce in Washington for final action.
Columbus authorities require alcohol sellers to state on labels the exact degree of dilution. The State Dairy and Food Bureau announced the rule, with penalties for noncompliance. The order sets minimum purity levels at 4.9 percent for pure alcohol and 0.8 percent for highly diluted products.
