Report from plantations notes seven cattle or swine dead after floodwaters. Livestock were seen floating in inundated fields and swampy areas around the plantations, with growers assessing losses and awaiting authorities on compensation and salvage options.
Marion County Arkansas floods force residents to escape on rafts as the Mississippi River overflows its banks. The city of Memphis reports record levels around 36.4 feet and rescues continue along the levees. Steamers assist stragglers with stock losses and widespread property damage noted throughout the region.
The Nashville area faces rising flood danger with the river at 41.9 feet and expected to reach 45 feet by Wednesday if rain remains light. Carthage nearby has hit 44 feet, forcing merchants to move stock and families to evacuate. no casualties reported. Damages noted from Friday and Saturday in Middle Tennessee.
The Nashville Chattanooga and St Louis Railway lost bridges on the main line and Fayetteville branch. Manchester water works were badly damaged forcing suspension of service. In interior counties high waters wrought immense damage to farms, fences and bridges.
Two cousins of the James brothers attempted to stop a Pennsylvania passenger train near Galveston to avoid paying fare. A passenger was seriously injured by a stone as the brothers attacked the conductor. Tom James was captured this morning and jailed.
In Coalburg West Virginia Henry Burke fatally shot Walter Johnson after a church quarrel following services. Johnson was knocked down and beaten before Burke fired once in the abdomen. Burke was transported to Charleston jail today.
Colonel Robert Thornton struck Captain Barney Treacy with a cane in the Lexington Circuit Court as they argued over dispossessing Treacy of Mrs. Preston's Ashland Park farm. Both men were bound over for contempt and to keep the peace for six months.
Joshua Wellington a Mormon missionary from Salt Lake City was beaten near to death by locals on Ten Mile Creek Lincoln County after his warning to leave the country. He was knocked down as stones shattered the schoolhouse lights and remains in critical condition. If he survives he intends to continue preaching.
In Pickens County a Black man Andy Beard who eloped with Lena Baines was killed by a 25 man posse near Olney Township. Beard resisted and was shot, while Lena Baines begged for death for herself. The mob left the body, and the girl was flogged by her father and brother aboard Kennedy area.

In Frankfort on March 15 Governor Bradley denounced a Republican faction’s attempt to use his name in a Senate race. Senator Goebel departed on a mysterious mission as party leaders dispute gubernatorial and senatorial ambitions and a looming March 23 voting date.
Ex Secretary of State Samuel M. Taylor of Ohio arrived from Washington to represent the national administration and Senate Steering Committee in the Kentucky contest. He met Republican leaders in Frankfort amid excitement as the Bradley plan to influence the nomination faced renewed scrutiny. Gold Democrats held talks on the Bradley move but found no solid plan to unite around the Governor.
In Frankfort Kentucky on March 15 both houses of the General Assembly held brief sessions and announced no ballot for Senator until March 23. The death of Senator Salyer of Morgan Casts a pall over proceedings as parties unite to pay tribute and suspend political rancor.
In Indianapolis Miss Jennie Doty of Middletown Ohio married Oliver Cousins of Middletown at the Grand Hotel amid her illness and a fainting spell before the ceremony. Cousins had stayed nearby nursing her at the hospital and the couple plans to return to Middletown.
Shocks in Michoacan and Colima regions over three days cause alarm as Colima volcano shows renewed activity with dense smoke. If eruption occurs it could damage adjacent valleys and properties.
Cold weather devastates range stock across Cheyenne Wyoming. Reports indicate widespread losses as snow remains deep and crusted. Sheep are thin and weak while cattle and horses suffer with some fatalities. Wolves on the Upper Platte ranges add to the trouble by killing full grown steers.
President William McKinley asks Congress for an extraordinary session to fix fiscal distress. He cites rising debt from 1893 to 1896, deficits, and bond sales, urging a tariff bill to provide ample revenue and support pensions and debt reduction.
Fire swept the Ely Walker Dry Goods Co store at Eighth Street and Washington Avenue causing $1.5 million in stock loss and risking the seven story granite building. At midnight the blaze remained uncontrolled with a wall collapse killing one firefighter and injuring two, as a street car and ladder truck were buried. About a thousand workers expected to lose jobs.
Margaret Hayes a 25 year old domestic at the Bethel Hotel attempted suicide Monday morning. Attendants heard breaking glass and saw her hanging from a window with her dress caught in the sash. She was pulled to safety and taken to the county jail on an insanity warrant.
A prison fire in Dover Stewart County early today destroyed the jail. Four prisoners were inside the building a white man escaped while three black inmates were unaccounted for with no bodies found this morning. The deceased were William Black Nebley and an old Negro woman.
Lewis A. Amrhein aged 32 collapsed during an epileptic seizure at home and fell into a cistern, drowning in Columbus on March 15.
The five ton stone sarcophagus containing General Grant's body arrived in New York from Chicago by rail, was moved to a steam lighter, and will be hauled to Riverside Park where it will be set in place. The total structure weighs about twenty tons and the transfer ceremony is planned for April 27, described as the most imposing of its kind.
In a Monroeville area wooded strip, farmer Jesse Foster discovered a dead man buried beneath a woodpile. The victim, about 45 with black hair, showed a fatal skull wound and a 32 caliber revolver with three discharged chambers. coroner labels it murder and robbery. Identification pending.
In Mercer County last night toll gate raiders burned seven gates and fired on gatekeeper Colonel Adkinson who was fatally wounded. Governor Bradley issued a proclamation offering $250 rewards for each raider captured and convicted.
In St Peters burg and Rome reports, foreign admirals order a blockade of key Greek ports led by Piraeus and Syra with Greeks warned to withdraw. Crete may be blockaded if Crete fails to hold. The Greek fleet is urged to depart, or be escorted from Cretan waters.
Vienna March 15 The powers decide to occupy Crete with six nations after France and Italy refuse to fund a 25000 man mixed force over expense Germany and Austria will merely nominally participate. Crete’s autonomous government and governor, likely French, are to be arranged. Paris March 15 Ex Minister Goblet warns France to back Greece. Hanoteaux cites blockade threats if Greece backs Colonel Vassos, with the chamber approving the declarations 856 to 148.
CANEA March 15 certain town areas lie open to pillage while Retimo faces a calmer scene though looting continues nearby. Governor Ismail Pasha is powerless to restore security as a serious measles epidemic breaks out.

London report from Canea says during gun practice on the Ces soi Veliki a turret exploded killing fourteen sailors and one officer. Sixteen sailors were wounded with five critically.
Jacob Gindelsparger, a Kendallville citizen, died suddenly in Lagrange. Fifteen years earlier he sold his body for 15 dollars to Dr. J L Gilbert to save funeral expenses and signed a contract drawn by Jo Wildman. Lawyers say the contract is valid and the body may be presented to a medical college.
In Whitesburg Kentucky Eli Isom and Henry Fraser residents on Rock House Creek twelve miles west of town dueled over Polly Lewis. Both men carried revolvers at twenty paces. Isom was killed Fraser escaped to the mountains. Isom’s friends posted a $500 reward and bloodhounds were set on the trail.
Lizzie Lloyd aged 20 years died after her clothing caught fire while alone at her parents home in Palmyra Alliance Ohio. She was found unconscious beside the blaze and died an hour later at the Alliance hospital.
In Cairo Illinois New London March 15 the French firm towboat Co capsized in an eddy at Hickman while in tow of the Oakland. Her head struck the eddy and parted off causing the accident. Everyone aboard escaped unharmed though the boat is a total loss.
News from Belmont near the Harrison County line reports Aaron Dayton dying from injuries after a quarrel with his sons Frank and Tom during a work all day dispute. An ax was used and a stake struck, leaving the father unconscious. The sons fled. no arrests or clues at this time.
Louisville March 15 John Gernert 18 was arrested for the murder of tailor Lorenz Martin 21 after a street quarrel. Martin was stabbed six times yesterday and died last night. The case was called in Police Court and postponed until Friday.
The United States Supreme Court strengthened state power to tax corporate franchises including express, telegraph and railroad companies. Kentucky cases against Henderson Bridge Co and Adams Express Co were decided in the States’ favor, with dissent by Justices White and others. The court also granted certiorari in United States vs Buffalo Natural Gas Co and dismissed Las Vegas land grant due to a resignation.
