Four people died instantly and a fifth died later after an automobile was struck by a Big Four passenger train between Cairo and Danville Illinois in Lawrenceville. The victims included Joe Akin 25 his wife Mrs Sarah Akin their three year old daughter and an unnamed baby. Rance Akin 20 and an unnamed infant born from the crash also died. Believed to have been blinded by a rainstorm Joe Akin could not hear the approaching train.
Mrs. Anna Sellek of Newark New Jersey will receive 4000 dollars after suing Howard Burch of Oswego New York for 15000 dollars over an automobile crash that doctors said moved her heart from left to right. On cross exam she testified the heart had moved back to its original position.
Three men A Pettitt Gus Anderson and Walter Laird all of North Arlington surrendered to police after robbing the Tuckahoe National Bank of 6000 dollars in Tuckahoe New Jersey. Bank director Edward Tomlin was shot in the head and hospitalized. cashier Edward Rice and Mrs Rice were unharmed. The trio fled in a car but were pursued by armed townspeople and night-hunt police.
Governor Donahey directs Ohio Attorney General to conduct a special grand jury investigation in Logan County into the killing of Ray Wren and the alleged beating of his brother Harry by a sheriff s posse during a lunacy arrest. Petitions urging state inquiry followed the fatal shooting and tense local climate.
In Hillsboro Colorado eleven to one vote could not end the first degree murder case against Dan Boggs after a day and a half of deliberation. Foreman Paul Watt said the twelfth juror Fred Hussey would not agree on the significance of certain testimony. The judge ordered continued deliberations with the jurors staying at a local hotel for the night. Magill Jr. was killed during a robbery attempt connected to Boggs and his brother, who faced the charges after a hardware store incident.
Chicago health officials report 120 new flu cases and 35 deaths in 24 hours. Health Commissioner Bundesen urges sick residents to stay home and rest. Fire crews directed to keep busy streets flushed while steady rain aids street cleanliness and disease control.
Springfield Vermont reports over 500 flu cases among 7200 residents with about fifteen new cases daily. No deaths yet, but many teachers are ill and schools have been disrupted. Public Health Officer Miss Nellie Butterfield released the figures.

The judge acquitted W. E. D. Stokes, New York hotel owner, and Robert F. Lee of conspiracy to defame Mrs. Helen Elwood Stokes. The verdict came after a one hour five minute deliberation. Mrs. Stokes was not in court. she later said the ruling might embolden other husbands to pursue similar cases.

Shepherd, foster father of the late millionaire William Nelson McClintock, was roused at midnight and taken to the State’s Attorney’s office as Dr. Charles Farman admitted Shepherd sought guidance on how to give typhoid germs without trace. Detectives pursued evidence as Farman acknowledged a missing $50 letter and a file inquiry.
Miss Hannah Parker, former maid, testified in the Dennistoun divorce suit in London. She recalled Mrs. Dennistoun saying Dennistoun had no money but was a nice man and described a seven week trip starting in Paris in 1923. Parker also spoke of a ride with a Prince Odes Calchi and noted Mrs. Dennistoun’s lavish lifestyle amid claims of misconduct.

Havana March 13 President Zayas interrupted a Cabinet meeting to receive news from The Associated Press that the Isle of Pines treaty had passed the U S Senate. The Cabinet then approved plans for a public demonstration of thanks to the American people in the coming days.
Three bold thieves boarded a parked auto on Third Street as its owner waited to alight. A shot struck Anthony Sauer in the left arm. he was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. A woman dropped a package during the escape and neighbors reported no woman present when police arrived.
Chicago March 13 The Board of Trade saw its most volatile session in years as May wheat plunged 16 cents, rye dropped equally, and corn shed six cents amid a broad market break. May wheat slid from 1.81 to 1.67 with July and September options off 6 to 7 cents, while Liverpool prices weakened and selling frenzy drove prices lower.
Mrs. Joseph Pulitzer wife of St. Louis Post-Dispatch publisher died in New York hospital from a blood clot after an auto collision with an elevated pillar. She had been unconscious for hours before death. Her husband Mr. Pulitzer was at sea en route to a Florida fishing camp and was flown to Miami after word of her condition. She is survived by her husband and three children.
Senator Reed Smoot of Utah, a veteran Republican leader, fell ill in the Senate and was treated before being taken home. His doctor described a bad indigestion attack but not a serious condition, with rest expected for two weeks. Reports at his home cited a general breakdown due to overwork and a possible return to cast a vote on the Warren nomination.
Tokyo reports that fifteen Uwajima Maru survivors ashore at Takashima indicate the steamer foundered in a Thursday gale off Northeastern Japan. About 100 passengers were believed aboard with many fishing boats wrecked and feared deaths.
The eight Uwajima Maru ships include one wooden vessel and seven steel steamers, distinguished by numbers. Tonnage ranges from 426 to 1,200 tons across the fleet.
