Greencastle Ind March 11. Charles Gray and William Gaynor were sentenced to life in prison for the murder of William Counts. The verdict avoided the gallows as five jurors favored hanging.
March 11. The Navy Department has heard nothing today from the monitor Puritan, reported in distress off Hatteras yesterday. This silence is understood to mean the vessel is safe.

A Harris Ferry resident girl awaiting a train at the Ohio River Railroad Depot climbed the trestle railing and hung thirty feet above the street as a southbound train passed. She was rescued in a hysterical condition after being caught on the track waiting to bid farewell to an escort.
A distressed murder note precedes the death of Jennie Deety of Middletown Ohio. Found in Grand Hotel Room 30 she lay in wedding clothes with a bullet wound. A note asks burial in bridal attire and names Alice Doty and Mrs Levy Elliot, while delirium mentions a man named Oliver Cousins. Police pursue a fuller investigation.
Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune reports Mrs. Alice Doty of Middletown learns her niece Jennie Doty died by suicide in Indianapolis. Doty was well regarded locally. physician restricts visitors. It is said she faced a troubled love affair with Oliver Cousins of Miami Cycle Works, who denies cause and early departed by train to retrieve the body.
Detective Murphy continues to pursue H. G. Naud, jailed in Pittsburgh on embezzlement charges. Naud is alleged to have sold $200 worth of Meiss Shoe Company samples from Cincinnati. He is reportedly wanted in Detroit, Cincinnati, and Montreal. Wolfel claims Naud’s initials match a man he once helped, and a prosecution may follow if the suspect is identified. Cincinnati police may detain him in transit from Pittsburgh.
Washington March 11 Mr Bramwell learned of a vacancy at Annapolis due to Cadet Mannix failing the January exam. No applicant has yet been named for the seat, creating a chance for a bright Second District high school boy to join the Navy.

In Sioux Falls South Dakota March 11 news reveals city treasurer P P Boylan died of heart disease on the way to church. His wife had been insane for thirty years and was kept hidden at home by him until neighbors learned the truth and she was taken to jail awaiting possible asylum care.
In Anderson Indiana on March 11 the Vanhoorbecke murder case formally opened with witness testimony. State's principal witness Miss Mattie Pritz recanted much of her grand jury statements and admitted defense attorneys had visited her with a letter. Coroner Sells drew interest as the case proceeds with further witnesses expected.
Floods threaten to divert the Mississippi, potentially making Memphis inland. The Baltimore and Ohio Southwestern Railway reports 1,000 workers repairing tracks and has resumed service between Louisville, Cincinnati, and St. Louis. Through trains will route via Louisville, adjusting to flood damage on Big Four routes. Total flood damage is estimated at six million dollars, split between railroads and local victims.
Dispatches report the river at 35 feet, two feet above danger, with rising waters expected to 36 feet. Levees hold but risk a new channel west of the city, submerging Arkansas lowlands and flooding areas toward Marion and Helena as Vicksburg nears 38.4 feet and danger at 41. The C. B. They readopted McKinley duties with class one raw wool at eleven cents per pound, class two at twelve cents, washed at twenty two to twenty four cents, and scoured at thirty three to thirty six cents. Carpet wools keep the 32 percent ad valorem rate despite some reclassification. American Wool Growers pleaded for twelve cents on class one but was not granted.
Springfield Ohio March 11 relatives reported a missing man Forbes a cousin of President McKinley. Police began an investigation but found no trace as of today. He was last seen around 3 p m yesterday near his home and relatives expressed great concern.
William Grines aged 67 suicided Monday afternoon by hanging himself in an unoccupied loghouse near his Howard home. He had married his second wife about two weeks earlier in March at eVibe.
A telegraph from Philadelphia circulated last night announcing Colonel Jessé Peyton Still alive and near death at his home in Haddonfield New York. The message described him as the "Father of Centennials" while noting his fragile condition but he remains alive.
Grace Sheldon Eggleston widow of Charles Eggleston sought to view his body after his death in St Louis. Undertakers blocked access claiming medical condition prevented viewing. Coroner’s verdict gave morphine poisoning by accident. Funeral set for Spring Grove with family and friends departing Ninth Street at 10 for cemetery services.

Arkansas Senate and House adjourned at noon without passing any appropriation bills. Governor Jones may call an extra session. Senate failed to elect a President pro tem, leaving Moore as acting lieutenant governor until September 1, 1898 unless an extra session elects a new leader.
Columbus March 11 The Ohio Attorney General declines a clear ruling on whether a Populist and a Democrat can serve as two examiners with opposite politics to audit the County Treasury. He notes both backed Bryan, the Populist’s non existence as a formal party, and suggests Perry County Prosecutor seek a court decision.
Mrs John Day a Black woman aged 105 died yesterday in Madison New Jersey where she had lived eighty years She recalled Lafayette’s 1824 visit to the town placing her life across two centuries and a long, noted residence in Madison.
In Cadiz Ohio on March 11 David Furbav aged 82 and widow Mrs Jacob Daton aged 36 were married today. The ceremony united two residents in a surprising marriage that drew local attention.
Cleveland March 11 Afro American politician George A Myers admitted he chose the delegates Bushnell named to the Tennessee Exposition. Myers said he wrote to the Governor who replied favorably and suggested he prepare the list. The appointees include Bishop B. W. Arnett Wilberforce University Rev W T Anderson Cleveland Geo H Jackson Cincinnati Dr C H Ferguson Toledo and Nelson Gant Zanesville.

Captain H. D. Baller, a native of Kentucky and former Kentucky regiment captain, died at his Guthrie home. He led a company in 19th Kansas Volunteer Infantry during the Indian hostilities of 1868 and 1869 and was influential in Kansas politics until 1889.
Chicago March 11 The case of Mrs Caroline B Bragg sister in law of General Egg Wisconsin remains unsolved with detectives interviewing Mrs Bragg at the hospital. The revolver used in the shooting was found and Josephine the maid has been arrested on suspicion though Mrs Bragg denies the maid fired the shot and refuses to name any other possible person. Meanwhile Mrs Bragg dictags a new will excluding Josephine from her estate valued at about 50000 dollars leaving it to I W and William Gallagher of Ohio.
Chicago March 11 The Democratic City Convention convened under Thomas Gahan with Charles Thornton as temporary chair. The Altgeld faction dominated and backed Carter Harrison for mayor, avoiding a free silver plank while endorsing Bryan’s platform.
Jackson O. Fogg, treasurer of Howard County Kansas, fatally cut his throat at his Center Point home. The bereavement of his wife and two children is cited as the motive, and he was serving his fourth term as treasurer.
Congressman Bromwell sent a telegram to his law partner John E. Bruce to distribute a thousand seed packages to gardeners in Mill Creek Bottoms badly damaged by the recent flood. The seeds come from an allotment held by the Department of Agriculture.

Athens dispatch reports the Greek king tells a parliament member Europe is alarmed not by Crete’s annexation but by Greece as a force in the Mediterranean. He cites the mobilized fleet creating jealousy and mentions recalling the Hydra and Admiral Miaulis from Cretan waters to prevent rivals seizing a pretext to destroy two top ships.
