In Chicago on March 10 James Medgram an Italian laborer fatally shot his wife Theresa and then shot himself. Theresa died en route to hospital while Medgram survived the self inflicted wound and is expected to recover.
In Rockford Illinois a fire killed the seven year old son of Joseph McCabe and Lottie Brickley the sister-in-law. McCabe efforts to rescue his child were heroic but may have cost him his life.
Congressman Cannon reports that appropriations by Congress for the war with Spain total nearly 500 million dollars in cash. The figure underscores the heavy financial burden borne by the nation during the conflict.
New York report states novelist Rudyard Kipling was told of his daughter Josephine's death. Doctors and attendants arranged the briefing to minimize distress as Kipling, recently improving, awaited further news and expressed sorrow with the echoed phrase Poor little Joe.

Authorities found one hundred bogus bills on his person after he returned from New Orleans where more were believed to be disposed. He faces arraignment before U S Commissioner Shields.
Washington March 10 Admiral Dewey must design his own uniform for the new rank though it is noted he has paid little attention to uniforms of late. His flag is blue with four stars in a diamond. His sleeve bands include broad gold bands and a central yellow band extending toward the elbows. A special act of Congress grants him pay equal to the last General of the Army.
In New York meetings over two weeks, Ohio and other interests faced 80 or more difficulties in forming a cast iron pipe combine. A Cleveland manufacturer reports serious obstacles may prevent the deal from going forward.
Cablegram from Manila dated March 10 reports the transport Grant arriving with troops in good condition. The Arizona and Newport depart for San Francisco today. the Grant carried the Fourth Infantry and four companies of the Seventeenth Infantry to Manila.
The forces under General Otis add forty two officers and 1715 enlisted men. The Grant with General W H Lawton in command sailed from New York on January 1.
The Farmers National Bank of Augusta Bracken County filed suit in Frankfort to recover 800 dollars allegedly illegally collected from 1893 to 1897. Attorneys J P Harbeson and George Donovan argue the Hewitt revenue law was not in force and seek the difference between 75 cents and 42 1/2 cents per hundred dollars as overpaid taxes.
A massive powder explosion in Tunnel No 3 at the Commodore Mine in Creede Colorado today killed at least four miners with six deaths feared. Names of the dead include Scotty Watson Frank Neal and John Lanner as rescue teams dig through debris to recover bodies and reach the injured.
In Albany on March 10 Judge Gregory suspended sentence on Mrs Cody who was found guilty yesterday of attempting to blackmail Jay Gould heirs. The jury recommended mercy and Mrs Cody left at 10 pm for Denver where her daughter lives who funded her travel.
Governor Bradley will leave Kentucky for a health trip to Hot Springs Virginia then travel west for a prolonged prospecting tour. Lieutenant Governor Worthington will assume acting governor duties during the absence.
Thomas Officer of Officer & Pu sey bank in Council Bluffs misplaced a $5,000 roll after drawing funds from the First National Bank of Omaha. He noticed the loss within a few blocks and searched, but the money has not been recovered. it slipped through a hole in his pocket.
Mrs Charles Tutt wife of Colonel Tutt a Kentucky railroad campaign leader attempted suicide in Knoxville using a table knife. The wound is serious. Colonel Tutt is at Carlisle Kentucky aiding the Black Diamond railroad effort. Insanity from long illness is given as the cause.
The presidential party will depart Washington at 6 PM Monday aboard the Atlantic Coast Line. Attending are the President and Mrs McKinley, Vice President and Mrs Hobart, Senator and Mrs Hanna, and Assistant Secretary Cortelyou. They expect to stay in Thomasville, Ga for a couple of weeks or longer if business allows.
A boy messenger departs Southampton aboard the American Line steamer St. Louis carrying a letter for New York recipients and will await a reply before returning. He will also deliver letters for an American gentleman in London to Chicago and Philadelphia to outpace the Postal Union.
Aged 82 or older resident A Atwater of Ashtabula was struck by a P. A. passenger train this afternoon. His left leg was cut off below the knee and his right arm dislocated. Recovery doubtful due to age.

The disease concentrates in the southwestern district among poor communities and jail inmates, with many cases mild and often unrecognized. Health Officer Woodward says the outbreak is not expected to grow alarmingly.
Dispatch from Pittsburgh reports that thick-vein coal miners in Western Pennsylvania threaten a strike over pay differences. Miners seek at least half of the 14 cent per ton gap compared with thin-vein workers, backed by thin-vein operators and Ohio miners influences. Operators on the committee refuse to cut the differential.
