Born Watkins New York 1835 he came to Oregon in 1862 and was U S District Attorney for Oregon appointed by Lincoln. He served two U S Senate terms and later practiced law in Portland.

Fire broke out yesterday in a coal bunker beside the forward magazine of the cruiser New York. The ship’s 600 crew faced imminent peril as flames could not be located and an explosion of 2,000 pounds of gun cotton and 6,000 pounds of powder was feared. The magazine was flooded, destroying $10,000 worth of ammunition. The wood lining charred while the steel wall heated to a glow.

A northbound St Louis express on the Illinois Central collided with a freight at East Cairo Kentucky at 1 20 this morning. Fireman Walter Rogers died with both legs crushed off.
