Rioters were drenched and hungry, some injured, as they battled streetcars with stones and bricks. The mob retreated toward the M Street Bridge under guard, with authorities saying state troops unlikely.
Governor Colquitt orders Adjutant General to Laredo to view the body of Clemente Vergara the Texas Rangers captain J J Sanders reports from Hidalgo Mexico where the body was recovered He details exhumation and transfer to Laredo noting gunshot wounds and a burned hand while questioning identity and inquest proceedings.
In Washington on March 9 the Senate adopted Tillman s long pending resolution banning smoking during executive sessions by unanimous vote. Tillman warned his life and party depend on clean air as he urged the measure.
Indianapolis March 9 Charles W Miller former United States District Attorney who prosecuted the dynamite cases calls the government victory a just end to a very important case He says it represents a great victory for the government and a just end to the proceedings
General Souders, head of the Souders faction in the Souders Turner feud, died at his Middlesboro home of pneumonia at 58. Once blamed for eleven killings, he claimed the last twenty years as a law abiding period. Andrew Turner, leader of the Turner faction, was recently killed under peculiar circumstances.
Owing to illness of juror Martin Altmaier the Franklin County Grand Jury investigating alleged civil service law violations adjourned to reconvene tomorrow. If he does not recover a new juror will be chosen and four days of work duplicated with many state officials recalled. The State Civil Service Commission postponed its investigation to later in the week.
A dramatic blaze in a seven story building housing the Missouri Athletic Club and Boatmen’s Bank killed seven found bodies and left 23 to 29 missing. Firefighters searched the smoldering ruins at dusk as officials urged guests to report. The fire forced cancellation of an intercollegiate track meet and caused about 466000 in losses while the cause remained a mystery.
A heated contest for the Kenton Ohio postmastership pits W W Durbin against Carl Smith with M M Thompson as the Durbin ally. Durbin and Kenton mayoral figure Price pressed Sen. Pomerene for a recommendation as the state machine fights to aid Thompson amid civil service concerns. Kenton lies in Rep Frank Willis district and Pomerene’s choice is still undecided.
Muncie Ind with a population around 25 000 voted 462 to 0 against saloons in a local option election. The bitter contest saw women voters serving lunch to temperance advocates and eight to ten people arrested for illegal voting as licenses expire in ninety days.
Prof J G Porter head of the Cincinnati Observatory and students prepared to observe the moon eclipse on Wednesday night. The shadow entry at 8 42 p m the middle at 10 13 p m and end at 11 44 p m with nine tenths of the moon covered.
Helen Keller, the deaf and blind woman, announced she believes she has finally heard a sound the high note of singer Minnie Saltzman Stevens. After experiments ending last night she is convinced her ear drums respond without aid. She will tour nearby cities and repeat the listening test on Thursday.
