Colonel James Forney will chair a court martial on March 17 to try Major Littleton W. T. Waller and Lieutenant John H. A. Day for executing three native stevedores in Baz Island of Samar without trial. The case follows an interior expedition last December.
In Norfolk Virginia on March 9 the strike appears over as the Arbitration Committee of the Chamber of Commerce announces settlement terms that strikers and the company will honor. Strike leader Sam Kelly was clubbed after a confrontation with a conductor and guard, sustaining serious injuries. he was taken to police headquarters and later bailed for court. The decision is viewed as favorable to the committee, and most electric workers have returned to work.
Mrs. Sarah Jane Peffer 70, wife of ex Senator W A Peffer of Kansas, died in Washington after weeks of illness and paralysis. At her bedside were ex Senator Peffer, W A Peffer Jr., and Mrs McIlhenny. she leaves a husband and five children. The body will be taken to Kansas for burial.
London Ky March 9 General T T Garrard patriarch of the Garrard faction in Clay County is gravely ill and sinking The White faction leader Judge B P White has moved his family from Manchester and plans to settle in Fayette County seeking peace amid long running feuds The Garrard and White families have dwindled and further trouble may force remaining kin to take sides with the Howards Bakers and Philpots on either side
Chinese officials report bandit violence near Jehol 100 miles northeast of Peking after Christians and non Christians clashed. A Belgian priest was captured by bandits as Brigands looted the region and Russian telegraph lines were cut.
The Duke and Duchess of Manchester rent the villa Corne d Or at Cannes to be near King Edward as he visits the Riviera. The duchess enjoys royal dealings and hopes to meet the king incognito. May coronation events in London are planned, with Helen Beach Yaw and Russian Grand Dukes among their guests.
In Vincennes Indiana on March 9 George Breivogel a well known young man went on a naked rampage. He was captured on a steamboat on the Wabash River and taken into care.
The Etruria arrived at Horta Azores with passengers safe after a propeller and rudder were broken off. A jury rudder was improvised and later fitted. Passengers await transfer to England aboard the Elbe and two tugs.
Cornelius Van Ness, an octogenarian Port Jervis millionaire, was baptized in the River Jordan by Rev. William K. Hall of Newburgh. The Van Nesses sailed aboard the Celtic to the Orient to fulfill a long held ambition.
The American Legation in Constantinople handed the Porte a second note on Miss Ellen M. Stone’s capture. It argues brigands inside the Turkish frontier must be seized and denies that Turkish authorities were ever required to guard the frontier while troop movements on the interior were restricted. The first note sought punishment of the guilty, while the Porte rejected responsibility.
In Zanesville Ohio on March 9 a local saloon window spectacle pitted Jake Hartmeyer’s game rooster against two large chicken hawks. The birds, over four feet wingspan, were caged in C W Morrisons saloon window as crowds watched bets top a thousand dollars. The rooster used a steel gaff to kill both hawks, the first quickly and the second after a longer fight. The mayor presided over the event as an excited crowd of about 200 witnessed the unusual duel.
In Harrodsburg Kentucky residents blew up the pesthouse to prevent removal of a Paris man with smallpox. Health officials then guarded the former site with bloodhounds and armed guards while plans for a new pesthouse proceed despite threats surrounding the case of Jesse Herron.
William Hildenbrand, engineer who has worked on Cincinnati bridges, submitted a plan to the Brooklyn Bridge Commissioners to widen the roadway by about six to seven feet, creating a total width of around 25 feet. He says vertical reconfiguration of outer cables keeps strength, traffic would not be halted, cost under 500000 dollars, project in eight to nine months.
ASHTABULA March 9 William Dean Howells the noted novelist left for Pittsburg to take a boat trip down the Ohio River to Cincinnati. They expect to reach Cincinnati probably on Tuesday.
Evansville Indiana March 9 reports show the Wabash River at 89.6 feet and rising with an expected stage near 41 feet. Farmers in the lowlands hasten to save corn in cribs as waters threaten crops and property.
A fast east bound freight near Trenton New Jersey killed two men between Princeton Junction and Millstone. Howard R Breese of New Brunswick was struck near Millstone. another victim was hit near Monmouth Junction. The men were found by the head brake man and the engineer.
In Paris on March 9 the chamber passed a law imposing a tax of one franc per 16 kilograms on crude petroleum. The budget for 1902 was finally adopted by a vote of 348 to 4 before the Chamber adjourned.
