In San Pedro California on March 8 Lester Elkins a 22 year old amateur aeronaut from San Antonio Texas cut loose his parachute after a balloon ascent and fell into the outer harbor dying despite boatmen efforts to rescue him. The balloon drifted far out to sea as winds kept rising. Antwerps French aeronauts Leblanc and Dupont had a separate near drowning when their balloon struck the Scheldt water and they barely saved themselves by climbing rigging.
