A Constantinople dispatch reports Crete may resolve the crisis by allowing its people to select their government. London officials reportedly favor continued occupation. German Kaiser and Greek Hydra engaged in naval signaling after Kaiserin Augusta fired a blank from Crete.
Greece replies to the powers with a conciliatory yet firm stance on Crete. It offers to withdraw its fleet from Cretan waters but refuses to pull troops from the island, proposing to place troops under international control and urging autonomy as inadequate to halt further massacres. The government argues for restoring Crete to Greek rule and warns that continued autonomy risks broader war. The Cabinet met through the night to finalize the message pasted to Foreign Legations.
Abner McKinley, brother of President McKinley, has secured apartments for himself and family at the Hotel Dennis in Atlantic City for an early visit. It is expected Mrs. McKinley may accompany the party though the hotel manager says the president’s visit is not confirmed. Apartments are being fitted up in handsome style in anticipation of a distinguished party.
Covington Deputy United States Marshal Stringer pursued John Thomas wanted in Covington on moonshining charges. After a heated chase from Richmond, the moonshiner escaped. Stringer fired six times but missed. Thomas had been moonshining in Jackson County and had previously escaped from Covington authorities.
Stanton Kentucky reports a local syndicate forming to stage wild cat bouts. Morgan Rice is set to fight a 37 pound cat on Saturday March 15, the largest captured in the region. A $25 sun forfeit has been posted.
Special dispatch reports the engagement of Miss Mariel Hanna daughter of Marcus A Hanna to Thomas H Beery of Toledo. Beery, 23, met Miss Hanna in Toledo about a year and a half ago at W. A. Gosline’s residence and expects to go to Washington soon. The wedding is planned for early spring.
Cleveland March 8 reports the Hannas publicly deny any betrothal talk involving their daughter to Thomas Beery of Told. Dan Hanna, son of Mr. Mark Hanna, states there is no truth to the report and adds this is the first they have heard of it.
In Buffalo a bill is proposed by Sen Lamy and Rep Braun to place all State newspapers under state censor supervision. Censors in counties with 10 000+ population would read and strike libelous or unfriendly material within 20 days after passage. Compensation set by the Comptroller. costs shared by state and paper. Offenders face felony charges.
Jeffersonville March 8 A saloon owned by John Krupp near the City Brewery caught fire. Habitues fled and failed to alarm. Charles A Burgy brewery manager rolled out and dumped enough barrels of beer to smother the blaze.
G William Gruver, serving fifteen years for the Voight murder in Chatham County Jail, secretly wed Miss Sarah in Savannah on January 19 in the jail parlors with Father Quinlan officiating at the cathedral, per reports.
Nelson Schlagle's killer Shelby Cole of Huntsville claims he intended only to frighten Schlagle during the December Galion incident. Cole says he is the man responsible and has been jailed in Bucyrus, Ohio.
In Columbus on March 18 Governor Bushnell planned to move into his Broad Street residence after returning from Washington but the home is heated by natural gas, which has been cut off by the flood, preventing immediate occupancy.

Holt is a leading candidate backed by these lawmakers, with Norman and Carroll also prominent in the Holt camp. First ballot expected Friday or Saturday with Hunter and Holt close, Boyle Yerkes Deboe trailing. Advances allege Barnett will open Boyle headquarters. Sixth District may later back Ernst. Louis ville March 8 Dr W Godfrey Hunter rooms in Victoria Hotel crowded with visitors. Hunter says a senatorial caucus should be held and will be held as a majority of the Legislature supports it. Senate leader William Henry Jones of Barren County is seen as proper to call the caucus and open headquarters in Frankfort Friday. Attorney General Taylor mentions a new caucus to be called by Jones for Friday or Saturday. A draft resolution in the Republican caucus seeks to drop the nominee after five days of balloting and replace him, facing opposition.
Democratic State Central Committee meets in secret in Lexington to map steps to stop the election of a Republican U S Senator. Blackburn allies and National Democrats plan separate caucuses in Frankfort Friday to pressure sound-money Democratic Senators.
Major A T Wood failed to present credentials as Kentucky’s senator today after a White House visit with Senator Lindsay. A Republican steering committee meeting discussed vacancies and possible seating of Wood and the governor’s appointee, with leaders targeting Populist votes.
Special Dispatch from Lexington Kentucky reports J Soule Smith, a Blackburn Democrat, began contesting the election of Hon R P Stall to the Legislature. The grounds allege Stall is President of the Eastern Maine Asylum board, rendering him ineligible for the seat.
Special Dispatch reports in Blancchester Ohio that Nelson a chair peddler from Franks estate consumed morphine and died tonight in the town. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and any possible connection to his sales activity.
Edward J Russell, convicted of attempting to extort $1500 from Corporation Counsel Almer F Jenks of Brooklyn, received a ten year term at Sing Sing. He had previously claimed a Ohio blackmail conviction and pardon by Governor McKinley. He also attempted suicide by morphine after his conviction.
In Columbus Ohio eleven year old Mary Lani gan, a Felton Avenue School attendee, collapsed during play and died this morning. Doctors believe the likely cause was a burst artery at the base of the brain affecting classmates.
ISHPEMING Mich March 8 The Winthrop iron mine will resume work at once with a force of several hundred men. Senator Mark Hanna is a half owner of the property.
Dayton authorities and ministers call for relief for flood victims. The Associated Charities has opened rooms in North Dayton to feed sufferers. Citizens across Dayton host flood district families. A mass meeting set up a relief appeal and a committee to gather aid. Some storekeepers and residents with losses hold off on touching premises until appraisals are made.
In Columbus Ohio on March 8 trains face detours as rain swells rivers. The Pan Handle section loses a bridge at Morrow and Palestine on the B&O is down, forcing Cincinnati trains to run via Chillicothe for Norfolk and Western and B&O Southwest. River levels fall as the electric plant resumes light. Gas remains shut off but will return soon. Factories sue after closures but the high water is not expected to worsen further.
Floods and heavy rains devastated county pikes and bridges crossing the East Fork and other streams near Batavia Ohio. Recovery costs exceed 75000 dollars to repair bridges and roads. Railroad traffic resumed this morning after a three day closure and telephone lines are back in operation.

The first mail since Friday morning arrived on a later train, while the Cincinnati and Muskingum Valley Road remains blocked westbound, with yards filled by freight traffic.

In Richmond Kentucky Richard Tribble a colored boy aged unknown was drowned in the Kentucky River at Ford while leaping on log booms. Initial reports say the accident occurred when he fell from the floating timber and disappeared beneath the current. Local authorities are investigating the incident.
In Little Rock on a March afternoon a fast mail train struck three pedestrians crossing a trestle. Orlando Howe and a son were killed instantly, while another son, Joe Howe, was seriously injured with a fractured spine.
Special dispatch from Winchester reports George Rage, an aged African American man from Decatur ten miles south, accidentally shot himself in the head twelve years ago while handling a revolver. He died last night as the bullet had never been located, making the death attributed to the old wound.
In Winchester Ohio March 8 the Brooks Waterfield Company of Cincinnati lost a land suit against Smith Grimes et al. Demurrer was overruled and petition dismissed for Liberty Township lands. Plaintiffs appeal to Circuit Court. bond set at 100 dollars. Judgment and decree for Mineral Springs property orders deed set aside, property sold, funds applied to plaintiff claims and cross petition by B F Power Company. Brooks Waterfield awarded 5894 dollars 89 cents. B F Power Company 2838 dollars. Court found the Liberty Township petition timely filed and dismissed.
In Cleveland on March 8 a jail confession reveals John O Neil recently sentenced to 15 years for murder planned to kill his wife with chloroform on the day of his arrest. Jealousy motive cited he fled to Pittsburgh where authorities captured him.
The Republican City Committee in Columbus Ohio voted to hold primaries for mayor and other city offices on Friday March 19. Delegates will be selected based on McKinley vote totals from last fall, one delegate per fifty votes or fraction.
In Crawford County Indiana Patrick Hudnut’s supposed last will and testament, probated years ago leaving all to his sister Sarah, is confronted by a later will presented by Miss Hudnut. The disputed document purportedly favors the sister-in-law with a nearly 200 acre farm and enables a divorce action. Sarah argues for honoring the dead’s wishes and refuses offers beyond return to her childhood home.
Special Dispatch reports Dr. W. W. Hubbard of Perth Amboy New Jersey nearly cut out his wounds in his Jacksonville Florida room today. He dressed and rode to the hospital revealing a ghastly scene with five deep abdominal and chest wounds and a history of severe chest pain. He is said to be a prominent Mason. his injuries may prove fatal.
Ex Sheriff of Mahoning County Eli B Walker died at his Lincoln avenue home from morphine overdose. A two term county sheriff and noted politician, he had troubled business matters and left the city for Pittsburgh before returning by Sunday. He checked into Hotel Anderson under an assumed name, was found unconscious when his room door was forced open, and died shortly after.
Peter Ross fatally shot his wife at a Kaukauna resort after driving from Appleton with Kittie Duprel. He wounded Duprel in the right breast and Fred Scharel in the abdomen when he fired on them. Ross surrendered to authorities.
United States Marshal McKay escorted E. W. Agnew the former president of Ocala's First National Bank to the Ohio State Penitentiary for a five year sentence. Officials fear he might lethal action if pardon is denied, based on a relative's report.

Luz de los Santos Rodriguez a Mexican woman and her two daughters drowned at a ranch lagoon near Brownsville. They went to fetch water when a girl sank while bathing, her sisters tried to rescue her, and the mother leaped in to save them, all perishing. Calvin Anderson died at his Fort Wayne home at age 94 after a long role in city affairs. He leaves a family of grown children. His first vote was for John Quincy Adams.
Dr William Moore a physician with fifty years practice celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of his marriage with his wife in Lisbon Ohio yesterday He is a full cousin of President McKinley their mothers being sisters and both born in Lisbon.
Indianapolis March 8 The legislature adjourned sine die after a day where only the Duncan bill passed to appoint a three member board by the Circuit Court to audit township warrants amid fraud scandals. Governor Mount vetoed or sustained vetoes on several measures while a rare House tribute praised Speaker Pettit. The session enacted laws on streetcar fares medical practice domestic insurance compulsory education and reform of various state offices and institutions.
Samuel P. Garritson, accused of stealing horses, was captured yesterday at Delphi by Detective Matt Moore and taken to Anderson. Warrants are pending in Dallas Texas Louisville Kentucky and Brookville Indiana. He said he would not have surrendered if his pistols had not been left in his grip at the hotel.
New York March 8 up to 12 30 this morning the Cunard liner Aurania had not been sighted after departing Queenstown February 3. She was due to reach Sandy Hook lightship at 3 a m Sunday, two days behind her best record, with rough weather delaying both the Aurania and the St Louis.

Scovel wires that he must be brought to Havana at once for trial at Santa Clara, stating his life is in danger though danger undefined. Spanish authorities show determination to dispose of Scovel.
