His wife and friends argued he was unjustly accused and improperly committed. Sensational claims linked the case to the death by his own hand of Lieutenant Albert P Burleigh, a friend and supporter.
Nils Fischer, 25, Swedish civil engineer and son of a wealthy businessman, reappears after vanishing in December.
