Special Dispatch to Commercial Tribune reports Ohio Senators Hanna and Foraker have cooled their public and private feuds. They agreed on an office slate settlement and pledged cordiality. Foraker may push a Cuban amendment limiting U S franchises, with only the first clause likely to pass. John Sherman plans a Cuba trip with nephew Wiborg as Washington notes the move.
Clyde Cole of Endicott was shot and killed by Bert Grundy in Whitmore after a party dispute over escorting Gertie Rickards home. Grundy later killed himself, his body found six miles from Endicott with a revolver nearby. Rickards witnessed the event.
C N Chadwick of Charlotte North Carolina a man of wealth shot himself in the bathroom of his Parker House suite after a period of delirium and a nurse was summoned. A telegram from Charlotte found among his effects read Absence causing anxiety. He was about 38 years old.
In Columbus Ohio March 2 a riot erupted as 109 smallpox suspects quarantined at Haig's Mission fought guards and police. Four escaped amid a street clash near Jim Dowling's saloon before authorities recaptured the men for a total of 118 quarantined at Haig's.
At the beef court of inquiry in Washington volunteers from Cuba and Puerto Rico testified that one third of canned meat was spoiled and with a putrid odor. Witnesses described slimy mass like meat, with many sick from the voyage and underfeeding on transports to Puerto Rico. The court planned to begin westward travel next Tuesday or Wednesday.
W H Clark, chief prosecution witness, faced cross examination as Monnett sought to impeach him. Judge Brinsmade ruled out the sensational statements, defense attacked his character citing past arrests for grand larceny forgery and embezzlement. Local witnesses testified to price variations and shortages, with several pedlers saying they were forced to buy or quit.
Neddeme yer Orchestra, a white group, refused to play at the High Street Theater matinee of A Lucky Coon in Columbus Ohio. The colored conductor appeared and led the performance with a colored female violinist as sole musician while the audience largely stayed.
Indianapolis March 2 Both Houses rushed second and third readings to forward bills for the governors signature within three days. The Senate passed the general appropriation bill and the swamp land sale bill along the Kankakee River. The House approved using sale proceeds for drainage in the Kankakee Valley. A bill to bar legislators and judges from aging railroad passes was killed and the governor vetoed a Columbus epilepsy hospital bill.
Albert Becker, who confessed to murdering his wife, led officers to the Randolph street viaduct to show where he said he threw her into the lake on January 27. Investigators doubt the tale as fishermen and others near the pier report the lake ice was at least twelve inches thick that day.
In Muncie Indiana March 2 striking workers at Port Fruit Jar Factory employ 75 boys and 300 hands quit work demanding eighty cents more per day. Intervening workers offering to fill these positions are attacked by the strikers in a wave of violence.
W A Vaughn, shot yesterday by his sister in law Lillian Marvin, lies near death with three shots fired, one hitting a book in his coat pocket. Marvin faces a preliminary examination on a charge of assault to kill and murder, bond set at 4000 dollars, jailed.
Rumors spread of mine planting near Old Point and Chesapeake Bay as a large shipment of torpedoes arrives at Fort Monroe and Norfolk. Officials hint at preparedness while denying specific plans, with transports moving explosives and a possible shipment to Manila aboard the Yosemite around April.
The nonpartizan Municipal Association votes against reelecting Mayor Robert E. McKisson at a Committee of Fifty meeting. John H. Farley pledges one term, depoliticized departments, and adherence to federal plan law, while Republicans and Lincoln League mobilize for Farley.

Charles Mc Cuen of Galion area was fatally struck by a large limb while chopping wood. He was married with a family and lived east of Galion. The incident occurred near his home on a March day.
The Mobile and Ohio train carrying the Second Missouri Volunteers from Albany, Georgia, wrecked two miles south of Tupeolo Miss. Four cars left the track tumbling down a twenty foot embankment. Dozens injured including Jake Stanley Jack McLaughlin Thomas Greathouse and others. Comrades rescued the wounded as officials and doctors treated injuries and prepared for travel to St. Louis.
Roland Molineux, indicted for first degree murder in the Katherine Adams poison case, was arraigned in New York. His defense asked for a week before pleading, but the judge set next Tuesday for the plea. The brief session ended after six minutes as Molineux greeted friends.
Herbert Barnett aged four near Bridgeway Kenton was burned to death after his mother Mrs. Barnett lit a fire with coal oil leaving a half full bottle. The child apparently held the bottle to the flames and clothes caught fire before the mother returned.
Shelbyville Kentucky March 2 William McCann a county country merchant was found dead in his store with a bullet wound in his head and a revolver in his right hand Authorities believe he took his own life due to ill health and note no foul play is suspected based on the scene and initial investigation.
Senator Hanna invites President McKinley to Thomasville Georgia for rest next week if public business allows. Hanna says the President showed a strong desire to accept and would go solely for recreation after the strains of the Spanish war. Hanna does not expect departure before the latter part of next week.
Lottie Alma and Nellie Herman daughters of undertaker Elmer E. Herman of Allegheny City received a mailed powder package with a note urging use for complexion. Their mother found the content Paris green and took charge. Ages 11 to 16. No police report yet.
Kipling shows marked improvement over the last day with a single bulletin describing satisfactory progress and slight fever. He rested well and slept several hours, while his two young daughters are reported not seriously ill and under care of a friend of Mrs Kipling.
Fred Burdette a Taylor County clerk died after a King'swood to Grafton journey. He had attended an aged aunt’s funeral and left a $20,000 fortune. Stomach sample sent to Baltimore for analysis amid poisoning rumors. no suspects identified. He was a prominent Democrat with no known enemies.
A neighbor returning with John Gilbert's hogs found Mrs Gilbert and four children murdered in Athelstone Township, Clay Center. The dead include a 9 year old boy and three girls aged 7 5 and 2. The family had not been seen since Tuesday night and the husband was missing.
United States Philippine Commissioners departed Hongkong today aboard the US cruiser Baltimore bound for Manila.
War Department orders six regiments to join General Otis in Manila, shifting regulars from San Antonio Madison Barracks Plattsburg and Ft. Crook to San Francisco then Manila. The plan presumes volunteers may return if conditions allow. Admiral Dewey seeks light draft vessels to improve inter island communication and runs trials on the gunboat Vixen and other small crafts.
The US transport Morgan City has reached Manila as the city endures a hot day. Officers wives and other women passengers were not allowed ashore due to unsettled conditions nearby.
