Woodrow Wilson formally relinquished the New Jersey governorship to Senator James Fielder at noon. In a farewell address he pledged to be guided by conscience not expediency and praised Fielder's honesty and courage.
Thousands of Princeton residents and Princeton University students gathered in a farewell demonstration for Woodrow Wilson in Princeton New Jersey. The crowds cheered as he left his bungalow promising to stay aware of local patriotism while preparing for the White House. A silver loving cup was presented and Wilson spoke from a box outside his home about remaining a plain citizen for three days before inauguration.
Fifty prosperous ranchmen near Burke South Dakota seek wives and hire Rev. Charles W Savidge of Omaha to arrange mass marriages. William Rasmussen travels to secure an entire carload of women willing to relocate to Rosebud country for husbanding and housework.
President Taft delivers a frank farewell to the National Press Club declaring his “besetting sin” and saying he plans to return to Washington to chat with newspaper friends about future administrations. He reflects on 55 years of life and his wish to leave a pleasant impression.
In Nige France on March 1 Maurice Maeterlinck acted as jury president for a Georges Carpentier Cyclone Smith boxing bout. Carpentier dominated and KO'd Smith in the third round, Smith largely passive through the match.
In Washington, the House debated woman suffrage for about thirty minutes amid noise over trolley service on Pennsylvania Avenue during the big parade. Speaker Hobson and Senator Heflin led opposing sides as speakers praised and mocked General Rosalie Jones and her suffrage hikers. The resolution passed 199 to 51.
Charles E. Field, son of Elisha Field and Monon Railroad official, was arrested in Chicago on a charges of being a fugitive from justice and wife desertion. He faces extradition to Indianapolis with a March 11 hearing set, after traveling with detectives across the country.
Miss Katherine Lanham, known as the Girl Spender, left the American hotel to return to her mother’s Edwardsville millinery shop after a three week spree that amazed St Louis society. A replevin suit by Clarence Gerber forced her home, ending a period of lavish spending and attention from gilded youths.
Gist Blair sails to New York for Monday noon marriage to Mrs. Frank Ellis of Cincinnati in Episcopal Church of the Ascension. Ceremony by Rev. Percy Stickney Grant. Guests include Franklin Ellis. Afterward the couple departs for Europe. Blair family prominence and connections noted.
Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, hours before his staff, rode to Fort Myer Virginia and drilled Troop A Fifteenth Cavalry for about thirty minutes. Captain Leroy Etinge observed and endorsed the Secretary's drill manual knowledge as he neared the end of his term.
Three tramps attempted a wash up in Monroeville jail area causing a gas filled cistern explosion under the village fire department quarters. A lighted paper ignited the gas, shattering glass and rendering the jail structure useless. The trespassers suffered minor burns.

In a special message Taft sent to the Senate Secretary Knox report on Colombia Panama split. The document says Colombia rejects preliminary settlement proposals and the United States has closed further overtures. It notes Colombian factions blame the Democratic administration and hints at uncertain future U S policy.
