The 112 Soldiers of Fortune from Kansas City arrived in New Orleans and are quartered while awaiting transport to Nicaragua and Bluefields. They deny filibuster aims and say they will work on Central American railroads. Bluefields Steamship Company refuses to carry any of them aboard.
New York reports Rudyard Kipling much better tonight after a severe pneumonia attack. A bulletin notes lower temperature and pulse, improved breathing, and a restful sleep, with doctors optimistic if no relapse occurs in the coming days.
St Petersburg dispatch reports Emperor Nicholas I designated Baron de Staal Russian ambassador to Britain as plenipotentiary to the armaments limitation conference. He will be aided by delegates including Prof F de Martens a senior foreign affairs official and university professor.
Word reached here that Mrs John A Logan is critically ill with grippe and complications at her home in Worcester. Major John A Logan her son on General Bates staff in Cuba has been summoned to her bedside. She is out of danger but very weak.
In New York on March 1 the Fayne Moore case was adjourned again due to the absence of the complainant Martin Mahon. Justice Fursman warned he would make an example of Mahon upon his appearance. Assistant DA McIntyre suspects Mahon is hiding to avoid testifying in the case.

W H Clark, ex-agent, testified that brands and prices varied by competitor pressure and that staff were told to flee jurisdiction. He said barrels leaked turpentine were sold as pure turpentine and produced letters on the subject. The defense and corroborating drivers supported his statements as the investigation resumes tomorrow.
In St Petersburg on March 1 a student strike spread across colleges and schools protesting police conduct after whips were used to break up a fete at the University. Students parade in uniform, cancel balls and fetes, and mourning is shown. Emperor Nicholas removes Police Prefect General Kleighels amid the unrest.
The Dominion Line reports the total loss of the Labrador from St John N B to Liverpool after striking Skerrymore Rock at dawn. All passengers were saved. Built in 1891 at Belfast the steel steamer is 401 feet long weighing 2998 tons net. Passengers included F Agoncillo of the Filipinos.
Chattanooga report says three large sticks of dynamite were found in the rear sleeper of a through passenger train from Atlanta. Police believe car thieves from Kennesaw placed the charge to blow up the train as it passed.
Rockford records a grim domestic incident as Henry Carter dies from injuries after his wife, described as insane, strikes him with a flatiron during a bout of grippe. Police provide no further details.
Manila dispatch reports rebels active at Caloocan and Malabon with earthworks ready for guns before Malabon Church. One American private Harold Parks wounded. Nebraska Volunteers clashed mild. Governor Stanley received a cable from Colonel Funston in Manila stating Captain D. S. Elliott of Company G Twentieth Kansas was seriously wounded in yesterday's dispatches and was killed in a battle with insurgents.
Morris Christopher, the black assailant who attacked a young white woman at Hope, Ark, on Monday, was removed from jail by a mob last night and mobbed. The outcome remains unknown though a dispatch said he was punished as he deserved. Christopher admitted the crime.
Springfield March 1 Lieutenant Governor Northcott signed a bill authorizing nine thousand dollars for a Frances E Willard statue to be placed in National Statuary Hall Washington D C The material bronze or marble to be chosen by five commissioners appointed by the Governor Federal law says persons not men thus no objection to the statue in National Hall.
Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein hosted the first drawing room of the season at Buckingham Palace in a day marked by mourning for Prince Alfred. Attending were the Duke and Duchess of York Premier Salisbury and the Diplomatic Corps WtWednesday.
Edward O Thompson of Indianapolis Indiana was named Postmaster at Havana Cuba today. The appointment came as a surprise and was secured through Major Estes G Rathbone Postmaster General of Cuba. Thompson has twenty three years in the postal service including three years as Postmaster of Indianapolis.
Roland B. Molineux was indicted by the grand jury for murder in the first degree in the death of Mrs. Katherine J. Adams. The four count indictment charges sending poison through the mails to kill, to kill an unknown person, cyanide of mercury, and an unknown poison. Witnesses included Coroner Albert E. Weston and Prof. R. A. Witthaus, with H. S. Cornish and Nich olas Heckman identifying Molineux and the poison package. He will be arraigned before Recorder Goff and likely remanded to the Tombs without ball.
Washington reports a cable to Admiral Dewey and General Otis instructing them to protect German residents and property in the Philippines. The State Department notes German interests in Samoa were not included in the proposition. Treaties require safeguarding all three powers’ nationals at Samoa, regardless of vessel nationality.

Stephen Glowser, 21, killed his wife and her mother in Poseyville, Posey County, and after shooting them he set fire to the residence and killed himself. The bodies were burned beyond recognition in the blaze following the triple tragedy.

Washington March 1 General Brooke reports to the War Department from Havana that Private James Murdock of Company H Twenty-third Kansas died of dysentery February 24 and Private William T Hynam of Company A Fifth Immunes died of malaria February 25 in Santiago.
