Clarence Darrow begins preparation for the spectacular evolution trial in Dayton Tennessee on July 6. A Santa Barbara quake kills 12 and causes 30 million in damage as aftershocks shake the city. Father Englebrecht, saved by a brother priest, survives a fall during a rescue effort.
About 1,000 Negroes joined a riot on John Street near Fourth Street as police attempted to arrest three wounded men. Officers used revolvers and clubs to break the mob after a woman was stabbed and two others shot or beaten. three arrests were made for rioting and disorderly conduct.
John R. Neal and Clarence Darrow with Dudley Field Malone confer in Chicago on the Scopes case. They discuss witnesses for Dayton July 10 and plan a swift trial path toward the highest courts, citing a renaissance in the Tennessee legal stance and broader national implications.
Samuel Cassidy, 40, and his son James, 17, fell from a 15 foot wall beside the Big Four ditch and were struck by a westbound train. Cassidy died at General Hospital. James is hospitalized in serious condition with brain concussion and scalp injuries. Police say a quarrel prompted the chase.
Dr Walter B Knight 57 of Delhi avenue was found unconscious in his Primrose Building office on Race street and died at General Hospital. Post mortem by Coroner Lance O Handley found}: scalp lacerations and beard torn from roots indicating a violent attack after unconsciousness. Police question widow and others as investigators seek motive and weapon use.
Reports from Jackson Wyoming say Chief Mountain near the Gros Ventre River is cracking amid earth tremors and an anticipated landslide may dam the river creating a large lake. Irrigation has ended for the season as the latest slide deepens the river and could flood the ranger station nearby.
In Portsmouth Ohio on June 29 Jah Howard 16 aimed to kill Ar e Craft 18 and herself. Craft is in hospital with probable fatal wounds. Howard is jailed claiming she did not know why she shot Craft.
Chicago dispatch reports W H Merrill Jr of Winnetka credited with stopping a pair of would be robbers who tried to hold up a driver. Merrill, once a cabman and heir to a six car fortune, gave his life to driving professionally.

Rebels attacking French forces near Ouezzan have been repelled several times. The fighting has moved to a position near the Hebrew Cemetery just outside Ouezzan, where civilians were evacuated by French orders in anticipation of further assaults.
In Chicago on June 29 two men were arrested after plotting to extort 500 dollars from Mrs. Henry Paschen by threatening to kidnap her four year old daughter. The plan involved letters and phone calls, and a policeman intercept. Leader Herbert Cotman, a former Paschen employee, admitted his role. messenger Richard Reno claimed no knowledge.
Eyewitness Dr. Frederick Vining Fisher reports the Santa Barbara earthquake as his Southern Pacific train trembled through rough passes. He saw trees, houses, and chimneys shaken, an oil tank toppled on the track, and slides threatening the train near Summerland before continuing to Los Angeles four hours late.
Santa Barbara faces extensive damage after a strong earthquake. City workers and volunteers begin cleanup as hospitals treat dozens injured and crews remove fallen bricks and twisted steel. A fundraising plan for reconstruction is launched with a 2.5 million fund and a 10,500 emergency relief fund.

New York June 29 Customs officers seized the three masted schooner Nantisco after discovering liquor concealed in the hold. The vessel had touched Nova Scotia and carried lumber. Eight crew members were aboard the ship at the time of seizure.
In Seattle during a devastating quake, residents recounted a moving hotel destruction and sea like shaking. Mr Richmond warned of a fortress like Arlington collapsing, while janitor Harry Afford described the Daily News Building as a small ship in a big storm.
