Sam Houston Hall erupts in bedlam as Alfred E Smith is nominated for the presidency by the Democratic National Convention. Delegates rally, standards turn, and a first ballot victory triggers a wild victory parade and lasting memory in party history.
Houston June 28 The Democratic National Convention platform text condemns centralization and pledges to protect state rights, oppose bureaucracy, and encourage business while enforcing Prohibition. The document lauds Woodrow Wilson and reiterates commitment to Jeffersonian principles and equal opportunity under Democratic governance.
Washington reports disclosures in an FTC public utility investigation into missing records of the Indiana Public Utilities Association and payments over 15000 to lobbyists at the Indiana Legislature. Testimony shows old records destroyed after a new secretary treasurer took office and that lobbyists were hired to block legislation.
Houston dispatch reports the Democratic platform compresses law enforcement into ten lines. It attacks Republicans for eight years in power, claims they must apologize for lax dry laws, and pledges the party and its nominee to enforce the Eighteenth Amendment and all federal constitutional provisions and laws.
Thomas P Henry of Detroit president of the American Automobile Association urged a national unified program for highway fatality and accident solutions at the open of the twenty sixth annual meeting at the Gibson. About five hundred delegates attended the opening session, the largest ever. He and others urged plain clothes police be avoided and county state use of uniformed police to prevent motorists being victimized by road officers in plain clothes. The committee warned toll bridges as a rising private profit issue with 425 started this year and urged the state to be the sole tax agency, excluding federal and local governments. Henry stressed safety as paramount, noting farm relief and prohibition loom large in politics, but warned about the nation’s safety and 25,000 annual tolls.
The Ohio State Republican Convention opened behind closed doors to draft the platform. Debate is expected over the proposed sample platform by Attorney General Edward Co Turner. The State Central Committee briefly chose two presidential electors Brig Gen Edward Orton Jr and Mrs Wilma Sinclair Levan to be ratified by the convention.
Irvin Colpak, 21, Amherst student and “jack of all trades,” killed himself after losing a wager. Danish photographer Paul Borglum, his employer, described a life beset by fears and loneliness. Colpak’s body was found in the studio anteroom between the laboratory and posing gallery.
After sixteen hours of closed debate the Democratic National Committee produced a platform aimed at enforcing the Eighteenth Amendment and supporting farm relief. Prohibition factions moderated by a Glass compromise, while leaders debated on prohibition on the floor and the draft measure was adjourned sine die.
Meteorologist W C Devereaux notes June rainfall in Cincinnati was 22 of 28 days with 8.28 inches total, breaking a 45 year record though no relief from continual downpours. He cites spring dryness earlier, 2.91 inches above normal for June but a 3.74 inch deficit for the year, with only eight consecutive rainy days and a 1881 peak of 17 days and 7.82 inches in June.
Gov Alfred E Smith is nominated as Democratic presidential candidate after a first ballot win. He and daughter Emily share a moment on the Executive Mansion lawn as supporters sing The Sidewalks of New York. Mrs Smith says she is the happiest woman in the world as crowds cheer in Houston Hall.
Alfred Emanuel Smith, born December 30 1873 on New York City s lower East Side at 174 Race Street, grew up amid poverty and neighborhood vice. He sold newspapers with 20 cents capital, managed local amateur theatricals, and earned a silver elocution medal in parochial school. His father died early, his mother returned to umbrella making, and at 15 Smith began work as a truck chaser to help support his family.
The Democratic National Convention nominated Al Smith for President and adopted its platform, adjourning at 12 50 this morning until 10 o'clock. A crowd outside Sam Houston Hall tried to crash gates but was beaten back by police.
Alfred E Smith of New York secured a near majority on the final roll call, breaking the last resistance of anti Smith candidates as Ohio Mississippi Indiana Nebraska Kansas and Tennessee shifted votes to nominate him for the Democratic ticket. The convention adopted the platform pledging strict enforcement of Prohibition with wets and drys united on the plank.
