A broad heat wave grips the United States with temperatures near 100 or higher in many areas. Phoenix tops 100, Washington hits 104 unofficially, and several prostrations and deaths are reported as the country swelters under record heat.
The city faced a blistering day as temperatures climbed from 78 at dawn to 90 by afternoon. Dozens were hospitalized and at least ten deaths occurred with a forecast total near one hundred, while humidity peaked at 74 before dropping to 38 later.
In Boston on June 26 the wind shift to the Northwest provided modest relief after five days of extreme heat. By 11 a.m. the temperature was 87 degrees. Four more prostration cases were directed to the relief hospital. In Cambridge, Andrew Fimowski, a sugar refinery worker, collapsed and died at his post. This afternoon three additional deaths were reported along with about six more prostration cases.
Providence reports one death and several prostrations on the sixth day of a hot wave. Robert Spencer, 46, an employee at the Silver Spring bleaching works, died as temperatures remained extreme. The death toll for the heated term rises to six.
The muggy heat persisted as a high ninety degree day wore on. Detective Jack Calnan, with Detectives Hill and Kelly, fainted near Twelfth and Vine and was placed in a patrol wagon after growing dizzy at McMillan Street.
In Delhi last night at 11 Albert Runch a 40 year old carpenter and father of five is found dead after a barroom fight with Milton Hensler 20. Hensler is jailed on intoxication but faces homicide charges once a warrant is issued. The fight followed a dispute after drinks at Kumpfs cafe and the marshal arrived to break up the brawl. Runch was pronounced dead by Dr. Lehman and Hensler awaits arraignment tomorrow morning.
In Pittsburg Pa on June 27 three thousand street car workers representing eight percent of the railway force voted to strike at 5 AM. The walkout followed a late night conference and may halt all traction lines in the area. Relief plans include extra trains by Pennsylvania railroad Baltimore and Ohio and Pittsburg and Lake Erie to serve 600000 residents.
Secretary MacVeagh amended interstate quarantine rules to allow John Early the leper to be transported to New York for observation and treatment or to a designated care site with health authorities consent. Proper supervision and sanitary precautions are required during transit.
Mrs Theodore Roosevelt wife of the ex president sails for Europe aboard the Cretic with her daughter Ethel and sons Quentin and Archie. They will spend a month with Miss Carew near Rome before touring France for Ethel's benefit and plan to return to the United States in November.
In Wilburton Oklahoma a mob of 50 masked men took Sylvester Stennien alias Alabama Red from the jail and lynched him after he killed Albert Turner who had attempted to arrest him. The incident occurred early today and underscores ongoing racial violence in the region.
In La Crosse Wisconsin June 2 a tentative open shop agreement and arbitration plan was rejected by strikers who then resumed the street railway strike, reversing an effort to end the conflict.
Attorney Stanley Moore said he would file a motion to impeach Assistant District Attorney Francis J. Heney in Judge Lawlor's court. He also planned a motion alleging bias by Judge Lawlor as Turner events drew 15 000 attendees and a final mass drill attracted 3 000 performers at the fairgrounds.
Cincinnati girls drew much applause with 900 women performing under Miss Koll during a Good Stadium show at the Fest Platz. The event featured drill exercises and a high-energy display ending with a climactic formation.

The body of Everett T. Gatchell of Kentucky was discovered in a bathing crib weighted with a stone and tied around the neck. The coroner concluded he had been dead since Thursday. Gatchell, a Colonel and member of Polley's Kentucky state militia regiment, left a note expressing fatigue and weariness and gratitude for kindness.
The St Michaels report notes lingering odors at the Broad Creek bungalow of Eastman where Hadith May Woodill was killed. Police plan another search and to dig near the site. A motor boat with two women and three men fled toward Broad Creek after the event. Jewels worn by the deceased were found in a Baltimore pawnshop, with $200 obtained for rings and brooch. Eastman’s finances and a disputed will draw interest as investigators weigh the jealousy murder theory.
James F. Harms of Fremont former government meat inspector who resigned to Secretary James Wilson has made public an open letter urging a general investigation of the inspection departments of the country’s packing plants. He says he was repeatedly informed the National Stock Yards at East St. Louis had superior inspection.
A fight at the corner of Sixth and John streets left a colored man named Diamond fatally stabbed in the neck by George Cornell. The assailant was injured by another man and a police inquiry began as doctors in City Hospital held slight hopes for Diamond’s recovery.
New York June 26 Mrs Howard Gould and her husband are unlikely to appeal Justice Dowling’s decision granting Mrs Gould a separation and 36000 a year alimony. Mrs Gould expressed satisfaction with the verdict and plans to depart for her Lynchburg farm Virginia. Divorce action by either party appears improbable for now per Mrs Gould’s counsel.
Five detonations of nitroglycerin damaged $30 000 worth of steel girders and freight cars on a Steubenville Ohio Wheeling Junction line rescue. A dwelling was wrecked and a woman injured as the vicinity shook. The girders were for a bridge repair by a nonunion firm allegedly warned to discharge workers.
George Barrowsay pawned his six year old son's shoes to obtain carbolic acid in Philadelphia. He waited for his wife who was assaulted but not seriously injured. Barrows died soon after from the poison, while the wife survived and was hospitalized.
