Democrats gather in Houston to back New York Governor Smith for the 1928 presidential nomination amid debates over prohibition. Reed and anti Smith delegates push for platform clashes while party leaders seek a harmonious convention. Texas aims to push a dry plank, contrasting with Smith camp.
President Coolidge, guided by John Larock, paddled a canoe up the Brule River near Cedar Island Lodge in light rain. He fished with new tackle and reportedly caught a heavy amount, while executive tasks were handled remotely from Cedar Lodge.
The report notes Al Smith holds about 710 first ballot votes with 1 100 delegates at the convention and two thirds needed for nomination. Two young girls, Anna May Stevens aged 10 and Hazel Conklin aged 5, died in a head on collision at Cutter and Betts streets as a car driven by Catherine Kibler and another by Luther Jones struck the sidewalk. Agnes Kimbrell, 10, suffered a severed leg as she was badly crushed in the same crash. The three left home to visit a nearby grocery, dashed to the store and were struck when the cars plowed into the sidewalk. Jones fled the scene.
Louis Walther 32, son of a former Georgetown Ohio Common Pleas Judge, drank poison in a downtown Cleveland lobby and died soon after in a hospital. He served 27 months in the AEF and had been despondent over gas and shell shock. His mother collapsed upon learning of his death.
Paris reports the French franc to be legally stabilized tomorrow at 3.93 cents in U S money with the rate set near 25.52 to the dollar and 124.21 to the pound. The Bank of France will issue new coinage, gold content reduced, as the measure aims to end wartime paper money and stabilize exchange. The public and officials anticipate passage by both Houses, with little immediate change in daily life.

British police uncover the Leviathan mail heist with an estimated 500000 dollars seized from more than one hundred registered mail bags. The theft appears to have occurred before the liner left New York as guards transported bags to London. Investigators report no tampering of outer seals, while internal bags revealed missing contents. Fenton H. Lawson and John H. Dickerson named to juror selection panel in Cincinnati.
Maj Charles A Lutz the Marine Corps oldest aviator died when the giant tri motor transport he piloted to Nicaragua crashed near File Virginia killing him and two crew members and injuring others The crash occurred after takeoff from Anacostia Naval Air Station and the craft somersaulted into a ditch injuring radio operator Reeder Nichols seriously while Corporal D C McChesney died later and Corporal Busbey was killed instantly
Police raid uncovered a 200 gallon still at 1900 Taft Road in a fashionable district. Authorities seized 35 gallons of white mule and 26 barrels of whisky mash, destroying equipment. Morton Herbert and Glenn Gosney, both of 1900 Taft Road, were arrested and charged with illegal possession and manufacture of liquor.
The failed bid of Frank O. Lowden for the Republican presidential nomination cost 78953.14 dollars, testified campaign manager Clarence F Buck before the Senate Campaign Expenditures Committee. Contributions totaled 88976.31 dollars and a 10000 dollar balance was noted as a digression in spending.
A board of elections hearing examined whether Citizens Republican petition signers acknowledged signatures before notary E Von Martels. George Ruffin testified none of his five signers acknowledged, while Von Martels claimed signatures were acknowledged. The case, part of protests against Citizens and Regular Republican candidates, will resume Monday with signers testifying and the matter forwarded to the County Prosecutor.

In Zagreb on June 23 a massive peasants funeral for Paul Raditch and Dr Basarit chek drew vast crowds. Deputy Prebitchevitch delivered the panegyric as Stefan Raditch, wounded in Belgrade, could not attend. Families of the slain Deputies mourn at the gravesite.
