A chaotic Chicago scene as about 850 Roosevelt delegates quit the hall. Taft secured 561 of 1075 votes to win the Republican presidential nomination. Sherman of New York was named vice president. Roosevelt bloc's abstention left Taft with a clear edge.
The roll call shows Roosevelt La Follette and Taft as leading contenders with delegates allocated by state. West Virginia abstained, Wisconsin gave La Follette 26 votes, Wyoming Taft 6, Alaska and DC 2 each for Taft, Hawaii 6 for Roosevelt, Philippines and Porto Rico 2 each for Taft. Absent 6 Hughes 2 Cummins 17 La Follette 41 Roosevelt 107 not voting 344 Taft 561.
Samuel G Blythe reports at Baltimore the Democratic National Convention plans to curb William Jennings Bryan early. Parker is opposed as temporary chairman though history links him to Bryan. Roosevelt’s Chicago stance mirrors Bryan’s push to control the convention.
At Chicago the Before the People convention ends with Taft nominated for president after a raucous debate. Harding backs Taft, Roosevelt supporters jeer. a brawl in the galleries prompts police action as Root appeals for order and the hall adjourns in near silence.
Chicago June 22 Roosevelt followers gathered at Orchestra Hall and named Colonel Roosevelt as a presidential candidate for a new party. The movement aims to organize state by state, with a national convention planned for August. Police faced a large crowd as delegates arrived and crowds pressed against doors.
