Three civilians killed seven seriously wounded and many more hurt as rioting followed the Belgrade Parliament shooting. Police wounded while demonstrations target Interior Minister Koroshetz with power outages heightening chaos amid martial law uncertainty.
Kenosha officials petitioned Governor Zimmerman for National Guard aid to restore peace and protect life and property amid riotous conditions. They cited damaged property and frequent shootings as riots occurred while 300 strikers at Allen A Company plant were involved.
Paris June 21 Premier Poincare announced stabilization of the franc will be set at its weight in gold. The Chamber of Deputies will discuss stabilization bills Saturday at 5 pm and the Senate will meet Sunday for the same purpose. The new franc is expected to become legal by Monday morning.
Renowned tragedian Robert Bruce Mantell, ill at Brucewood New Jersey from winter ailments, shows little chance of recovery. He returned six weeks ago from a Shakespearean tour. He is accompanied by wife Geneviev Hamper Mantell and their son Bruce, a Detroit University student.
London June 21 The mutinous stowaways aboard the Australia Commonwealth liner Jervis Bay are reported under control Capt Daniels worded that by twenty first night everything is going well stowaways under safe control and the ship expected to reach Colombo by Monday morning Earlier frantic calls indicated eight stowaways hidden below and a crew mutiny with threats to set the vessel afire Marines were dispatched aboard the Slavel to assist a possible return to Colombo No warship nearby and concern grew as the Jervis Bay nears transfer to the White Star Line with crew pay cut from 75 to 40 dollars monthly.
A 13 year old Johnny Raid crawled into an 18 foot mill tunnel to search for his beagle Jiggs. Currents knocked him down and swept him three miles through the tube to Lake Erie. Firemen and police searched the exit while a ballplayer John E. Benckley later rescued the dog inside the tunnel.
King’s Bay Arctic efforts focus on Roald Amundsen and Italia crew as Nobile’s safety is assured with Maddalena supplies. Planes face fog for possible dawn search while French warships aid Archipelago operations.
Judge Stanley Struble, noted handwriting expert, prompted A. E. Miller of Portsmouth to admit forgery of three checks totaling about $150. Miller initially claimed a brother signed one check. After examining the documents, the judge ordered Miller jailed to “think it over.” Miller then confessed to all three offenses and received a reformatory sentence.
Prescott Arizona June 21. A bank cashier David Saunders shot and killed robber William J Forrester 30 and with Deputy James Roberts and clerks recovered all 50000 dollars. The surviving robber Paul Hauffmen 45 was captured after chase by Saunders. The trio used plates from Arizona California and Oklahoma.
In a bare Bucharest courtroom a trial unfolded with no spectators as Princess Helen filed for divorce. The proceeding named Prince Carol for violation of marriage vows and abandonment of their son King Mihai. The court granted an absolute divorce with a five day appeal window.
In Mukden June 21 Chang Hsueh Liang, son of Marshal Chang Tso-Lin, is appointed Governor of Manchuria succeeding his father who died from wounds after a bomb attack on his train. He pledges peace, uses his father’s fortune for education, seeks abrogation of unequal treaties, and proposes talks with Japan for a peaceful settlement.
Norman Mack issues a statement asserting no alteration of belief as he presses for a constitutional amendment to restore state authority to set alcoholic beverage content. The push centers on day law and state rights in regulating alcohol.
Gov Alfred E. Smith reiterated his long held opposition to the dry law. He said the Eighteenth Amendment was improperly adopted and states should set beverage limits. The New York World News Service posed the Houston inquiry ahead of the Democratic National Convention. Mack said he spoke for himself not the governor.
Federal officials paused from routine duties to aid Owen Thomas McCafferty a 28 year old laborer from New Bethlehem Pennsylvania. He pleaded guilty to possessing narcotics and was sent to the Miami County Jail in Troy Ohio for a three month drug cure officials hoping confinement would break his habit. McCafferty said he had used drugs for two years and sought jail as a path to recovery with the cooperation of officials.
Armor A. Moore, 48, of 3434 Eastern Avenue, died at General Hospital after internal injuries from a June night crash. He was struck by a taxicab driven by William Ryan at Fifth and Main streets as he stepped from the curb. Witnesses say Moore moved into the cab’s path.
Superior Wisconsin reports President Coolidge fishing in a ten gallon hat and dry flies with rubber boots and a slicker over a khaki shirt. Locals say worms are discarded, pleasing trout anglers and perplexing guides at Cedar Island Lodge on Brule River. The president lingered on Brule Island testing new tackle as rain swamped roads en route to Superior.
Two fifteen year old youths Frank Wolf and Roy Lind died during a makeshift naval joust on a pond by Gest and Mee- lean streets. A black boy witness William Coleman of 914 Poplar led rescuers to the bodies at the county morgue. The dream of Frank Kloss of 1330 Baymiller aided identification at the morgue as investigators pieced together the events.
Streams in the Hocking Valley were at flood stage and rising after heavy rains and cloudbursts. The crest is expected tomorrow with crops and gardens ruined, livestock drowned, and rail and road transportation disrupted. One death attributed to the flood near Glouster.
In Washington on June 21 the GOP launched its national drive under Secretary Hoover and Senator Curtis. Hubert Work was elected National Chairman with Ralph Williams, Mrs Hert, and Daniel Pomeroy as vice chairs. Plans include central headquarters in Washington and separate Eastern and Western hubs in New York and Chicago. Will notify Hoover at Palo Alto late July and Curtis at Topeka. Work led executive talks on campaign strategy amid applause and good will.
