General Shafter gains a pivotal ally as Calixto Garcia brings 40 Cuban companies into four battalions near Santiago. Observers describe a disciplined, well-equipped force including 80 rank and file per battalion, 40 officers, six Hotchkiss guns, four Maxims, and two Krupp guns.
