In Kennett Missouri on June 17 a third St Francis River levee crevasse in two days floods about 100000 acres, leaves 1000 families homeless, threatens crops. Workers and Red Cross aid flood victims as 75,000 acres submerge and damages rise to millions.
In Nashua New Hampshire Marcel Theriault a former State Senator and Katherine Thomas 22 died after a plane they rode in crashed at Ferryal Field with flames from a gasoline tank explosion. Pilot George Lennox of Wichita Kansas was badly burned and in critical condition in Nashua Hospital.
Five people including three Erie men and two Jamestown women were killed when their light coupe crashed into a trolley near a viaduct. The car allegedly traveled at high speed while the trolley moved five mph. The victims were Ralph T. Bass, Gertrude M. R. Jason, Benson, J. C. Byrne, and Albert Byrnes, all returning from a Chautauqua Lake dance.
Rosalie Claire an upcoming star of Sunny Days at the Cohan Theater died at St. Luke's Hospital after a car collision in Grant Park. Audrey Maple suffered shock and minor injuries. Driver Julian Black and chorus member Herbert Carnegie were bruised. Tasek, another chorus man, had a fractured skull and was treated.
Miss Claire, a dancer and singer of unusual ability, drew applause with authentic characterizations. An ardent fight fan, she attended Cincinnati’s first visit to see the Dempsey Tunney bout.
Edwin T. Meredith, publisher of Successful Farming and other magazines and former Secretary of Agriculture in Wilson's cabinet, died at his Des Moines home at 6 tonight. Heart disease listed as cause he had been ill about four months after recent Johns Hopkins care. Meredith rose from farming roots to run Meredith Publications and advocate for farmers, later entering politics and national service.
Newbold L Pierson aged 70 of 1320 Hillcrest place died at Jewish Hospital from injuries after being struck by a car at Hamilton avenue and Astor place. Driver John D Scott Jr 17 was arrested for reckless driving and referred to Juvenile Court. Pierson former secretary to three Cincinnati mayors and was returning from the John Vogelpohl plumbing company.
Mrs. Marguerite Richardson Wood recalls being duped by a fake nobleman named Sir Donald Thursfield. A December engagement was publicized by Dwight Richardson but later reports claimed Thursfield died on a secret mission to the Ukraine. The tale unravels as she recounts the six month silence and the ensuing scandal.
In Stonington Connecticut Harvard student and assistant manager William Wayne Neff was found hanged from a tree after a two week missing search. A torn vest rope, belt and neck injury were noted. A checkbook with Boston payees and Harvard Hasty Pudding Club ties were found. The missing youth had been mournful since a failed prior attempt. His father, Chicago millionaire Nettleton Neff, aided the search with Scouts and police. The body was found 100 yards from the main road near Capt Jimmy's Inn where he checked in two weeks earlier.
Severe storms across Southwestern Oklahoma and Southern Kansas leave eight dead and about 1 million dollars in damage. Blair and Headrick Oklahoma suffer heavy losses with four dead in Blair and four in Headrick. two Kansas tornadoes cause property damage but no fatalities. Flood warnings issued as rains swell rivers. relief troops guard against looting. A Chanute Kansas tornado wrecks a school, church, brick plant, and homes with no injuries.
Reports from Salonika say the Greek fleet at Mytilene has joined tobacco workers striking for better conditions. Power plants and utilities are protected as water works at Salonika were damaged during clashes between strikers and troops at Kavala, with casualties reported.
Rumors spread in Rome that three members of Gen. Umberto Nobile's Arctic party were rescued by sealer Hobby. Officials offered denials as press extras circulated while the ministry sought confirmation and noted Hobby traffic near Hinlopen Strait.
