In Chicago on June 17 1912 Taft and Roosevelt factions arrive for the upcoming convention with high hopes and deep fears. Analysts doubt vote totals cited by Dixon and McKinley aides and warn of staged battles and potential disorder as factions try to influence delegates. The plan foresees Roosevelt and Rosewater initiating a contentious session with strong rhetoric and possible clashes.
Harry K Thaw the man who killed Stanford White won his first argument in court today seeking release from Matteawan asylum. Dr Roy L Leake testified Thaw is constitutionally inferior yet sane. Witnesses for Thaw included a former governor and a college professor.
French aviator Rolland Garros won the 10,000 prize at Angers aviation derby covering 683 miles in seven laps Angers to Cholet Saumur back to Angers. He completed the first day task and finished seven laps in 7 hours 56 minutes.
Erie, June 17. Lake Shore Limited No. 43 struck an automobile at Parker's crossing killing Thomas A. Snider 55 of Cincinnati and Mrs C Staunton Snider 46 on their honeymoon trip from New York to Los Angeles. Miss Ethel Staunton 20 and Arthur F E Leete 31 were badly injured. The chauffeur Leete and the Snider party had just crossed as the train at sixty miles an hour hit the car, throwing victims up to 100 feet. Coroner investigating.
Chicago dispatch reports Colonel Roosevelt delivering a fighting address at the Auditorium as thousands cheer. He vows to battle the national committee and defend the people’s will, with Senator Borah declaring the people the court of last resort and urging against fraudulent delegates. Cheerful roars continue as Roosevelt challenges rivals and defends his stance.
Chicago dispatch reports tense. Taft backers move to enforce precedent while Roosevelt leaders press to seat Roosevelt delegates and rally at Auditorium theater. Governor Johnson of California pledges unit voting for Roosevelt as nerves run high ahead of roll call and potential bolt.
In Columbus on June 17 W M Brennan serving six years from Cuyahoga county was killed and John Schultz of Columbus captured as guards surprised two convicts attempting to scale the east wall of the penitentiary. They had escaped to the basement where they found an extension ladder and rope before being discovered.
Springfield dispatch reports Miss Julia Clark, a Chicago aviator and third American woman with an international pilot license, died instantly during her first aeroplane flight at the state fair grounds. She trained in San Diego and held a Cicero Aero Club base.
Roosevelt delegates in a Chicago caucus voted that a binding majority requires 540 uncontested delegates. The drastic rule would govern temporary organization of the convention, aiming to prevent a bolt and stabilize the Roosevelt coalition. Senator Kenyon urged pause for sober second thought as Taft HQ sought a response.
