Berlin papers warn shortages grow grimmer with reduced flour rations and scarce meat while Ukraine aid proves illusory. Officials cite deteriorating health trends as births fall sharply and hunger drives hunger substitutes amid grim three month outlook.
Labor leaders at the AFL convention in St Paul announce plans to adjourn by next Saturday though extension into a third week is possible. Officers are to be elected and key resolutions acted on. Samuel Gompers is favored for the presidency while Secretary Wilson will speak and a British labor mission may attend.
The report lists fair weather across Ohio Indiana West Virginia and Kentucky with cooler conditions near the lake and a possibility of rain. It provides station temperatures highs and precipitation notes for cities including Montreal Jacksonville Denver Pittsburg San Francisco Chattanooga Los Angeles Chicago Cincinnati and Kamloops with a detailed June 16 1918 temperature record and a comparison to the prior three years showing temperatures winds and rainfall amounts.

The War Industries Board ordered wartime conservation measures affecting next spring fashion. Women’s shoes capped at eight inches, limited colors, no new lasts for six months, and encouragement of low-cut styles. Men’s coats shortened, fewer pockets, trimmed trousers and restricted wool. Raincoats capped at 48 inches, collars limited, and double coats with detachable linings banned.
Bayonets used in severe fighting as Americans retake a village after Austrian forces fail to advance. Two other attempts at different points also met with failure for the Huns.
Paris applauds soldiers returning from overseas as huge lorries roll through the city. In the Toul sector near Xivray a German raid on the American first line fails after two hours of hard fighting with bayonets and rifles. Nine Germans fall, six prisoners taken including two officers. no Americans reported missing.
German raiders of about 150 men and 3 officers attacked American trenches south of Thiaucourt at 2 AM. The fight left at least 20 Germans dead, one American missing and one wounded prisoner taken. Americans used heavy artillery and rifle fire, with light American casualties.
The Bavarian War Minister in a speech cited by The Vossische Zeitung says the central powers are in a stronger military position than at war start. He claims Entente offensives this year are impossible, with Allies forced to defensive plays and using main reserves. He cites prisoner numbers and booty as proof of wear, and notes Italian front positions deep in Italian territory from Southern Tyrol to the Piave mouth.
Debs addressed the three day Socialist of Ohio convention in Canton denouncing anti draft measures and Liberty Bonds while warning of a crisis reminiscent of Bolshevik rise. He praised jailed Socialists and urged firm adherence to principles amid clashes with federal authorities.
G I Christie former Indiana State Director of Agricultural Extension Work and current supervisor of farm labor activities for the Department of Agriculture is designated to represent the department on the new War Policies Board. The board formulates and executes policies on industrial relations common to government departments and agencies.
Colonel Charles Young of Wilberforce, 50, on a horseback ride from Wilberforce to Washington to show officials he is physically fit to command. Officials doubt his fitness after years off duty, though he holds the highest rank ever accorded to a colored man in the Army.
Three soldiers killed and seventeen injured when an army motor truck fell through a wooden bridge into the Etowah River in Cherokee County near Atlanta. The victims were from Camp Gordon. several injured were fatally hurt. Federal agents and civilians aided in rescue and recovery. The incident occurred while the convoy was pursuing draft evaders in the county.
A June report from Rome details a strong Austrian offensive along a 65 mile front from Val Stagna to the sea. Italian counterattacks regained ground as battles raged around Asiago plateau Monte Grappa and the Piave, with over 3,000 prisoners counted and 31 enemy planes shot down as Allied air forces bombarded Piave crossings.
Washington reports Dutch propaganda over ships seized by the United States lacks factual basis. The Shipping Board says vessels are in good condition, manned by capable crews, and to be returned with any losses replaced, with 31 under naval control and 58 in the American merchant marine.
