Labor Commissioner Johnson reports Kansas wage rates rose faster than living costs from 1901 to 1904. Compared with 1900 prices, 1901 shows 5.36% price rise and 0.53% wage drop. 1902 4.33% price rise and 7.82% wage gain. 1903 4.73% price rise and 10.01% wage gain. 1904 12.73% price rise and 14.98% wage gain.
President Roosevelt names a five member committee headed by Charles H. Keep to study and reform government methods. The panel, including Frank H. Hitchcock and Gifford Pinchot, will seek economical, modern practices for decisions, purchasing, accounting, and interdepartmental coordination. secretary Shaw announced two radical steps.

The body of sixteen year old Joseph Minster was found in the Ohio River two miles below Bromiley Kentucky after a swimming accident with Gymnasium Boat Club companions. He left with two friends from Avondale to swim. current swept him under a barge and he did not resurface. The youth, son of Mrs. Sarah Minster, was a Walnut Hills High School student and a noted athlete. His body taken to Menninger's morgue in Covington. identification pending. Family and Rollman & Sons figure prominently in the aftermath.
Dayton Ohio residents Peter Wendel a 74 year old real estate dealer and his wife 70 were badly burned in a gasoline stove explosion. Wendel was lighting the stove when the tank exploded and scorched his face hands and arms. Officials fear he will die.
The West Virginia Supreme Court sustains the ruling of State Tax Commissioner Dillon that oil gas and coal leases are taxable. The decision assigns about 400 million dollars in value and several million dollars annual revenue to the state and counties, reducing the tax burden on realty and personal property. Judge Brannon notes the constitution grants the Legislature power to tax all property including lease rights, which the coal company defends as its property. The ruling, while about coal leases, sets a principle applicable to oil and gas leases.
Washington dispatch reports Melville Fuller to retire and William H. Taft to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, succeeding Fuller and joining the International Board of Arbitration. Roosevelt allegedly approves the plan, with Taft’s presidential bid paused by a bench appointment.
Cleveland June 16 It is rumored here that Mayor Tom L Johnson has been offered the management of Chicago's municipal street railways. It is intimated the offer is being seriously considered and may lead to his retirement from Cleveland and Ohio politics and withdrawal from renomination as Democratic Mayor.
