The Kentucky Baptists meeting in Mt Sterling opened with Moderator Coleman as chairman and Rev. J. P. Trotter as secretary. Ninety preachers attended as talks covered South’s advances and future work, with discussions on orthodoxy and ministerial devotional life.
Harvard plans to award the French Ambassador M. Cambon the LL D degree for his public service in restoring peace between the United States and Spain. Warden Coffin punished fifteen inmates for stealing cigars at the Columbus Ohio penitentiary. Among the thieves was John Thomas, a veteran with a wooden leg. He exposed his wooden peg as guards found forty cigars inside.
President McKinley aims to raise nearly 40 000 troops for Otis to crush the rebellion in the Philippines. A re enlistment bounty of 450 is offered with travel pay home, travel back to the United States, and free rail transportation on discharge. Otis will name officers for three provisional regiments and reforms may follow after the Eastern trip.
Official records show four months of hostilities with 226 killed in action 69 died of wounds and 864 died of disease among American forces in the Philippines. The report misses the Zapote River battle where ten Americans were killed and 40 wounded. It urges greatly increasing General Otis's command.
Carroll M. Rice, condemned for killing his wife, was hanged at Alton Oregon County. Moments before the drop he broke from the sheriff and tried to flee, but was recaptured and executed. He told the crowd of about 5 000 that he hoped to meet them in a better world.

Columbus Ohio June 15 Attorney General Monnett filed a statement with the Secretary of State regarding his connection with the late State Republican Convention He says he was offered nomination by Prof Fess Ada Ohio and informed an Erie County leader favored Linn W Hull He states he had no headquarters agents or staff and that Prof Fess made no charges or bills He submitted the report out of abundance of caution despite no formal requirement.
Dispatches from East Africa report famine is widespread in German possessions and in the British protectorate. Hundreds of women and children die from starvation as resident whites struggle to address the growing distress amid drought conditions.
Congressman Taylor recommends William Hostetter for Census Supervisor in the Seventeenth District covering Mahoning Columbiana and Stark counties. His appointment would settle the supervisor question in six of Ohio's nineteen districts.
San Antonio dispatch reports Brackett, about 120 miles west of the city, inundated by a water spout causing ten feet of flood with four missing presumed drowned. The deluge spreads over miles around the town.
Richard Parks Bland died at Lebanon Missouri surrounded by family after a long career as a free silver advocate. His funeral is set for Saturday at Lebanon Opera House with services led by the Masonic Lodge. Born 1833 near Hartford Kentucky and settled in Lebanon in 1869, Bland served in Congress from 1872 with a notable push for silver coinage.
State Inspector Lester reported to Governor Bradley that Knott County is overrun by a 300 strong whitecapper band calling themselves Regulators. About forty are indicted but fear prevents convictions. recommends legislation to allow distant-jury selection for trials.
The Howards and Bakers marshal forces with Philpots a 150-man ally faction for Bakers. Dozens flee Clay County seeking safety as a New York correspondent fails to hire a transport, barred by a lender demanding deposit, and departs on foot after leaving valuables and addresses with locals.
Charles Skinner of New Lexington was fatally injured in Zanesville Ohio when a thirty pound keystone from a third story window fell onto him as he stood in front of the Stevens Block on Main Street.
William Maggard was shot dead by Chris Craft while mediating between John Moore and Craft at Rock House Letcher County. Craft fled with a posse in pursuit. In a separate incident William Bingham shot John Riddle in Pineville over a woman, then disappeared into the mountains. The Binghams are noted local figures.
Belgrade reports Albanian bands aided by 2000 Turkish regulars attacked Servian villages in the Javlonitza district. Many killed and wounded on both sides as Turks overpower frontier guards and blockade three villages. Servian regular troops dispatched to repel the invaders.
Information from Washington reports a proposed coalition between Daugherty and Kurtz Republicans in Ohio to control the State Central Committee and select a new Executive Committee and campaign officials. The plan centers on replacing Dick as campaign chairman and Malloy as secretary, while avoiding opposition to the national administration. Judge Nash rejects a move to contest seats, saying it might be time to fight the Democrats.

In Paris on June 15 the rioters linked to June 4 assault on President Loubet at Auteuil were arraigned in the Tenth Correctional Court. Comte de Dion led the accused, denied Royalist ties, claiming to seek a new republic while asserting the crowd hated Loubet. Defence says defendants only cheered the army and faced rough treatment. Trial adjourned to tomorrow.
At Brest on June 15 crowds expect Captain Alfred Dreyfus to arrive from French Guiana aboard the Sfax. Court of Cassation posters are torn or defaced with anti Jew inscriptions, reflecting Jewish tensions. Rival factions clash amid the stir.
Jackson MO June 15 John Heidrick the nineteen year old farmhand was hanged here for the murder of James M Lait and the attempted murder of his employer s wife on July 1 1898.

The plan would shrink western forces push Russia toward Asia with Manchuria Korea and a Siberian railway expansion while potentially reshaping European power. Brutus, a lion from an animal show, escaped in the North Illinois street area and roamed for an hour. The beast leaped across a street and entered a grocery through an open window. It then raided a butcher shop ice box before being overpowered and recaptured after injuring a man.
Bella Anderson known as Carrie Jones testified in New York on June 15 in the George Barrow kidnaping case. She described the Brooklyn to Sloatsburg trip with the infant and said the Barrows were in the same car but not seated with her. She reaffirmed her earlier confession and details of the abduction.
President McKinley and Mrs McKinley depart Washington for Holyoke Massachusetts to attend Mt Holyoke College commencement in South Hadley. Their niece Miss Grace McKinley is among the graduates. The ten to fourteen day trip includes visits in New England.
