Sixth eruption of Mt. Lassen claims one life
Two eruptions at Mt. Lassen today sent black smoke 2000 feet high and ash across the peak. Lumberman Lansing Graham was crushed by falling rock. one companion injured as observers reported. The eruption lasted about half an hour with ash and steam drifting north, crater enlarging since prior rest.

Fatal Chesapeake and Ohio wreck near Dayton Ky
A high speed wreck on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad near Dayton Kentucky killed Engineer John Burwell and injured Fireman Thomas Murphy. The chippy locomotive left its rails colliding with an eastbound freight, sending the engine and tender down an embankment by the Ohio River. Burwell, 76, died instantly. Murphy escaped with minor injuries as the cab was crushed in the wreck.
