Columbus observers recall a large parade at Ohio State University for the fortieth commencement. 1600 students alumni marched in costumes from maidens to miners and red devils while departments and foreign students displayed floats. Governor Cox to speak later this week plus senior promenade.
The Supreme Court decided that states and railroad commissions may fix intrastate rates that are not confiscatory, preserving state authority while allowing federal override on interstate rates. It ruled Minnesota rates for Great Northern and Northern Pacific non confiscatory, but Minnesota & St. Louis rates confiscatory, with possible future review if rates become confiscatory.
In New York, June court session reveals Wirt Chariton and his wife Dace Melbourne Chariton blame each other over alimony and his wish for children. Chariton, mining magnate and president of Chariton Mines, says he wanted children with his second wife, while she testifies to coercive actions and threats allegedly tied to the marriage.
In Indianapolis on June 9 a replevin suit in Judge Einhardt's court involves Colonel Russell Harrison, son of the late Benjamin Harrison, over five Home Builders Company shares loaned to Durflinger in 1911. Durflinger accuses Harrison of fraud to claim stock and seek receivership. Foster Shirley, for Durflinger, says Harrison lied to obtain the stock to press a receivership.
Paris June 9 Rembrandt painting Bathsheba fetched 200000 dollars at a sale of Baron Steengracht of The Hague collection. The purchaser was Duveen advancing the modern art market with the bid.
Burton son, facing possible third trial for strangling Mrs. Rose Menschik Szabo at Greenwood Lake last July, is reported to be ailing with blood poisoning in his jail cell. The District Attorney’s decision on the third indictment awaits in New York County.
Conductor T. J. Smith warded off a mob at the East St. Louis car platform after being shot by a Black assailant. Smith drew a revolver and prevented lynching plans, while the assailant was detained by police later the same day.
Ness County reports say millions of grasshoppers are killed by a local fungus. State Entomologist S J Hunter notes the nonmigratory hoppers live and breed on farms as investigators study the fungus for possible distribution. A weed shipment with dead grasshoppers was sent to the University of Kansas for analysis.

The journalist testified Fred Dalton took the chief’s blanket and used the desk as a bed.
In Springfield Ohio on June 9 a habeas corpus action was filed seeking Dr Arthur B Smith's release from County Jail before his trial for cyanide poisoning murder. The case moves to the Court of Appeals in Columbus tomorrow at 10 o clock for a ruling ahead of September trial.

Dr. Askelon Mercer aged 75 of Beaver Falls and Sarah L Grove aged 60 of Wetzel County West Virginia married themselves at the groom’s home claiming self marriage is as binding as a priest or officer. Mercer said his last wedding was May 3 1904 with divorce May 4 1903 and that each ceremony was witnessed and followed by a legal divorce.
In Cleveland a man attacked Helen Leperoski, 3, using the child as a shield to evade a father’s shotgun. Police and a large posse searched the area near 6821 Gertrude Avenue. Two suspects are in custody. The child remained hospitalized with a hopeful prognosis.
Columbus official William G. Long aged 41 died today from injuries to the large toe sustained December 12, 1911 when a man he was arresting stepped on his foot.
Boston art figure Joseph Knowles plans a three month solo experiment in Northern Maine forests to live without tools or clothes. He will hunt, trap, fish, and rely on primitive skills to prove life before civilization. Observation will be allowed as he records his survival.

He aims to overtake Weston as he marches with reporters and newsboys escorting him from Park Row to the North River. He says the pilgrimage is a sport not a political move.
La Crosse Wis June 9 The Young Women's Christian Association led by Amanda Clement physical director has started a class of seventy five young women to study the problem of imperfect feet. Clement has diagrams of feet with and without shoes and will exhibit them publicly to illustrate common deformities from improper footwear. In seventy five pairs examined none were perfect and all showed some deformity due to wrong shoewear.
