Theodore Roosevelt condemns the national committee action seating Roosevelt delegates from the Ninth Alabama district after a contested vote. He urges protest by Republicans to preserve the party and vows to pursue further steps if challenged. Roosevelt adds that Alabama deserves twenty four delegates and cites support from allies and notable figures visiting Saga more Hill.
A French naval tragedy near Cherbourg as the battleship Saint Louis collided with the submarine Vendemaire during maneuvers. Twenty six crew members perished with the submarine cut in two and disappeared beneath the Race of Alderney currents. Rescue efforts and salvage plans followed while Paris officials were informed.
Free Lance the chestnut colt by Imp Alvescot Merry Heart won Latonia Derby as crowd cheered. Jockey C Peak rode the 3 year old to victory over Worth and The Manager, with Gina Rone and Sprite disappointing in the field. In Columbus on June 8 the Ohio tax commission cut the appraised value of John D. Rockefeller's Forest Hill Cleveland estate from 1,121,270 to 983,550. The reduction lowers his annual taxes by a little over 1,500 as Rockefeller objects to taxes on what he calls scenery rather than the property's actual value.
The German cruiser squadron led by Rear Admiral Von Rebeur-Paschwitz steamed from Hampton Roads at 3:30 PM for New York. Flagship Kansas with Louisiana New Hampshire and South Carolina preceded the group, including Moltke Stettin and Bremen.

Lewis Meriam of Salem Massachusetts has been appointed assistant chief of the newly formed children's bureau. Meriam a Harvard graduate and veteran statistician in the census bureau since 1905 will lead research and data work to support child welfare programs.
