Federal detectives raid a Marion Ohio area hub of the Black Hand society leading to ten arrests, with operatives in Lima Dennison and Columbus under guard. Officials say thousands of dollars were sent monthly to Italy as suspects warned of possible jail deliveries.
Springfield Ohio hosts the Ohio State Sunday school convention golden jubilee with about 1000 delegates, the first meeting at Fairbanks theater, Dr. Henry Frederick Cope of Chicago delivering a sharp critique of culture and church priorities while 1000 local workers conduct a lightning census visiting most city homes.
In Memphis the Confederate reunion parade ended amid intense heat with over a hundred flower carriages, twenty bands, and a guard of honor of Confederate officers with attendants. The day also saw the Sons of Veterans organize, and Governors Sanders of Louisiana and Noel of Mississippi spoke. Two deaths from heat prostrations reported as Nashville, Mobile, and Houston compete for the next reunion site.
M A Mersfelder of Cincinnati bought a new car in Hamilton and while driving home lost control near the city, crashing into a touring car driven by Mrs. John E. McCarthey, theater manager of Hamilton. Mrs. McCarthey was thrown off but not seriously injured. Both vehicles were badly wrecked. Mersfelder was unhurt.
United States Attorney General George W. Wickersham addressed Lehigh University at the fiftieth annual commencement. Degrees were awarded to 100 members of the class of 1909 by President H. H. Drinker. Wickersham received an honorary Doctor of Laws and argued that merely technical education is not sufficient.
Charles HL Newman of Buellpost Marietta receives the indorsement of his post and broad support from Ohio Grand Army of the Republic veterans for department commander at the Newark encampment next week. He has served on the council of administration and six terms as post commander and is well respected in business and state wide circles. Comrades from Muskingum valley will rally to his campaign urging election at the Newark gathering.
London observers report Reginald McKenna and Foreign Secretary Grey leading the second imperial press conference focusing on naval strength. Grey warns that without a strong navy no other subject matters, urging unity with dominions and restraint in armament spending.
New York June 8 A settlement of the suit of the Pennsylvania Sugar Refining company for 30 million dollars in damages from the American Sugar Refining company was reached by attorneys late today. The terms of the settlement are not public. The suit has been on trial in the federal courts.
In Washington on June 8 the woolen schedules debate in the Senate featured humor around amendments led by Mr. Dolliver and defended by Mr. Smoot and Mr. Warren. A lecture by Carter illustrated wool production from sheep to garment, including miso and grading terms. Dolliver and Warren clashed over ad valorem duties. Warren used Dolliver's suit to show garment costs far exceed cloth value. The day ended with an early adjournment at 5:30 p.m.
At Hamilton Ohio a 15 month old child of firefighter James H Devore was killed at the Millville avenue crossing of the Cincinnati Hamilton and Indianapolis railroad. The infant followed his mother onto the tracks and stepped in front of an approaching passenger train from Indianapolis. Engineer Michael Ryan shouted and applied full brakes but a curve limited visibility and the train could not stop in time.
Constantinople dispatch reports the commander of the Fourth Turkish army corps ordered to seize Urumiah and pushed advance detachments toward Tabriz as the Turkish forces move in Persian Armenia.
Charleston WV June 8 deputy sheriffs arrested fifteen leaders of yesterday's riot after a clash with strikers at the Boomer mines. Strikers under a red flag fired on car repairers and Mine Superintendent Gillies. hundreds of rounds exchanged but no injuries reported. A heavy guard remains at the mines. Italian consulate notified.
Decatur Cereal plant in Decatur Illinois, the world’s largest white cornmeal mill, burned early today. Loss listed at 291500 with 160000 covered by insurance. builder plans to rebuild. Pipeman John FE Sheehy killed by falling timbers. four firemen escaped injury. Foreman Collins climbed three stories by elevator shaft cables to close fire doors protecting the warehouse.
In Lisbon on June 8, Domingo Centeno and Count Arnoso former minister fought a political duel with swords in a local park. Centeno stabbed his opponent in the thigh ending the confrontation. Centeno is allied with Dr. Jose Alpoim chief of the Progressive Dissidents.
Orville and Wilbur Wright with sister Katherine plan departure for Washington Wednesday afternoon. Lorin Wright stays in Dayton to oversee the factory operations.
A Chilean earthquake shook Copiapó Bay with cracks in walls and property damage but no loss of life. A distant quake also registered at the weather bureau, estimated at 4000 miles away, near Northern Chile or the Aleutians, with moderate intensity and long tremors beginning after midnight.
Elisha Smith and Levi Johnson were arrested on Squabble creek Perry county for ambushing and shooting Ed Callahan ex sheriff and feud leader. The posse with bloodhounds traced the trail to Govan Smith’s home then to Squabble creek where the arrests were made. Callahan remains alive and may be moved to Lexington for an operation. Elisha Smith is brother of John Smith linked to the feud.
Government inspectors convict blackmailers operating in Columbus and near Dayton suspected of similar schemes in Cincinnati and Hamilton. Targets included Joseph Amarino and Fred Ciancola on West Sixth Street who faced $10,000 ransom demands. Handwriting matched letters to others, suggesting a central Ohio operation centered in Marion with Lima as a directing hub. Investigators Oldfield Pate Hutches Hosford Owens led the case. two suspects fled to Bellefontaine.
The Burley Tobacco Society met in Winchester with delegates from forty two counties to decide on pooling the white Burley crop this year. If less than eighty percent join the pool the effort will be abandoned. Production is estimated at about two hundred million grounds in the district unless night riders interfere. A committee was appointed to discuss salary with President Clarence LeBusin and report tomorrow. It is believed LeBusin will remain leader for another year.
Pittsburg reporters say a man named Charles Froman was assassinated after a picnic at Oakland park near Uniontown. Mrs Fanny Rodgers was arrested on an accessory to murder charge and jailed before the shooting. Froman reportedly argued with a man now being sought by authorities.
In San Antonio police found Joseph Salinas and Carlos Solusa, young Spaniards, locked in an embrace on a bloodstained floor after a knife duel. The door was opened by officers who detected the scene, with both men injured and others said to be involved.
