Ohio officials estimate about 35 000 men may join the selective draft, with one in five of registrants likely to be called. Exemption rates run high as reports from 70 counties show nearly 90 percent citing grounds for exemption, shaping a possible eligible pool of 168000 statewide.
A Kickapoo medicine man and circus rider named Baby Lane, vowed to sacrifice his wiry hair for military service. He desires to join the First New Jersey Infantry and asks Colonel Fraser to aid his enlistment. The Mohawk grandson of Dye Ball has also applied, while Fraser contacts the Eastern Department about the aborigine recruit’s eligibility.
Washington reports slow returns from Tuesday's military census hinder progress toward a final count. Officials say the 10,200,000 figure for men of draft age is unlikely to be matched. Ignacia June 7 The Ute Indians who refused to register for the draft changed stance today. All but eleven of the young bucks left their reservation and marched to the registrar’s office which was reopened to accommodate them.
Judge Thomas signed a decree in the PD. & Loewe suit against the United Hatters ordering the sale by hammer of homes owned by Danbury and Norwalk hatters. Sales begin July 16 to satisfy Loewe's $256 000 judgment. U S Marshal Hawley of Bridgeport named special master to oversee the property sales.
Weather report lists multiple cities with highs in the 60s to 80s and rain totals. Cincinnati records a high of 79 and a low of 62 for June 7 1917 at 7 p.m. meridian time, with 0.0 precipitation.
Caspar Giesling of Lick Run ran after a wind blown straw hat at Fourth and Vine. He had two baskets of eggs and paused to recover the hat leaving eggs scattered. A bystander lamented the hazard and value of the eggs versus the hat.
At the Washington reunion General George P. Harrison was reelected Commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans. Tulsa was chosen as the 1918 meeting site. Five thousand Confederate veterans paraded before President Wilson and Vice President Marshall as Union guards watched. General Julian S. Carr was elected Lieutenant General of the Army of Northern Virginia, while General J Thompson Brown voiced joy at the unanimous vote. The group pledged support for Wilson and backed a cotton tax refund bill, then attended dinners aboard the Mayflower.
Amsterdam dated dispatch reports Lieutenant Schafer, a leading German aviator, killed. He had shot down thirty Allied airplanes.
In Ironton Ohio the body of Lula Vires aged 19 was identified by her mother Mrs Lottie Vires of Prestonsburg Kentucky as the daughter missing since December. The mother described a troubled liaison with a suspect and vowed vengeance while authorities pursue a possible Kentucky Infantry link. The body weighed down with railroad rail was found in the Ohio River and earlier identifications linked it to Mrs Mary Pulley McCoy of Huntington West Virginia, though that lead proved unsettled.
A quarry dispute at St Louis Workhouse near the river led to a fight among 231 prisoners. One white inmate and eleven Black prisoners were injured as rocks, fists, and buckshot were used after an initial rock hurled at a Black man.
Bologna University, oldest Italian seat of learning, conferred on President Wilson an honorary doctorate. The university traces its founding to Theodosius III in 40 A.D. and remains renowned for its historic scholastic tradition.
Washington reports a sharp clash over the wooden ship program as F A Eustas and F Huntington Clark accuse General Goethals of blocking wooden ship contracts. They say firms offered 496 ships in twelve months or 786 in eighteen months on cost plus 10 percent, which Goethals rejected for flat pricing.
Paris June 7 Rear Admiral Lacaze Minister of Marine told the Chamber of Deputies that submarine losses have risen. He said Germany’s blockade date failed to affect Allied ships and that France had not been blockaded. He defended navy actions and urged confidence among lawmakers.
The Silver Shell tanker from Wilmington Delaware sank the first German submarine known to fall to American sailors since the war began. Commander William J. Clark of New York leads the naval gunners and his promotion is under consideration. The 5605 ton vessel, built in 1916, carried 37 crew and used wireless gear.
The Argentine sailing ship Obama was sunk by a submarine in the Mediterranean on Wednesday. The crew were saved by a French ship after the submarine shelled the vessel and its men planted bombs in the hold, which exploded.
London reports say British Premier David Lloyd George, staying at Walton Heath, heard the detonations marking the Wytschaete Bend attack. He had been briefed on the planned hour and ordered 3 o clock wakeup if the noise could be detected. The blasts were also heard at his London residence.
The Mohawk Brighton area was unanimously selected for a city social unit experiment after an organizing drive led by Ruth Gottlieb. About 500 people attended the Chamber of Commerce meeting where supporters pledged aid and local schools reported strong voting for the plan.
Major General Franklin Bell succeeds Major General Leonard Wood as commander of the Department of the East. A West Point graduate, Bell rose from lieutenant to Chief of Staff in eight years, earning notice as a fighter in a career described as truly military.
British forces launched a nine mile front assault in Belgium from Messines to Wytschaete and captured Wytschaete and Oosttaverne as mine blasts and heavy artillery created a sweeping advance. Prisoners numbered over 65,000 expected by Reuters while 2,300 had already been taken behind the lines. The action involved English Irish New Zealanders and Australians with tanks in the assault.
In New York the American Medical Association heard Colonel Theodore Roosevelt urge persistent service to country beyond the draft. He warned unfitness as a citizen if one does not seek useful voluntary work and stressed equal honor for drafted and non drafted men. Dr. Arthur Dean Bevan was elected AMA president for 1918 19. In Springfield Missouri on June 7, six men and a woman were arrested in connection with the kidnapping of J S Keet's four or fourteen month old son. No trace of the child or kidnappers has been found. Sunbury Pennsylvania arrests were reported but later said not connected.
In Washington on June 7 an anti drinking sign appeared in about a dozen cafes. Bartenders asked patrons for their registration cards, which prove age. One youth claimed he left his card in another suit, but the reply was unyielding.
The Delphos Division of the C H D Railroad sold at a Dayton master sale under Judge Hollister. Joseph Joseph & Bros Co of Cincinnati bought the 85 mile Delphos to Stillwater Junction section for 195000. A six mile Stillwater Junction to Dayton segment sold to a reorganizing stockholders committee for 100000. The Michael Hyman Co of Chicago bid on the first half. Wellston and Toledo divisions to be sold Friday.
Frank R. Wilson, representing Treasury Secretary McAdoo, met the Liberty Loan Executive Council to plan the reception in Cincinnati. He announced a ten person party including Governor Harding of the Federal Reserve Bank. A military escort will meet McAdoo at Central Union Station Monday at 5 25 p.m.
Wesley Frost United States Consul at Queenstown Ireland returns to the United States with his family for rest after witnessing the deaths of many civilians. He cites sleepless nights from the shrieks of dying women and children and says he observed eighty one steamship disasters. He will consult a neurologist before reporting to Washington.
Kronstadt Republic unconditionally surrenders to the provisional government. Anatole Lamanoff signs for Kronstadt while M. Tseretelli and M. Skoboleff negotiate terms for the provisional government. The move backs Kerensky's army control and ease of the Petrograd munition strike. The United States increases its wartime role.
The War Office admitted Italian airmen attacked the Austro Hungarian base of Laibach in Tyrol. Towns in the Corinthian Alps were shelled. The headquarters of Austro-Hungarian forces on the Isonzo front are involved.
