A British steamship was sunk by German submarines in U S coastal waters. The crew survived the attack and reached an Atlantic port after the vessel went down.
The British steamship Harpathian, 2 800 net tons, was torpedoed by a German submarine about 100 miles off the Virginia Capes. The entire crew was rescued by the steamer Palmer after drifting 26 hours. Captain Owen reported a torpedo strike, with no mine suspected. The sinking raises patrol concerns as submarines push farther into the Atlantic.

Mt. Vernon Ohio police say Alphone Micheaux a 56 year old man was found drowned in a shallow pool and the death is attributed to self harm after his wife’s recent death. Relatives had searched for him since yesterday morning.
A Madison Square Garden rally plan for a "justice for Russia" event adopts a resolution by delegations of Russian border nationalities urging U S recognition of the Russian Soviet government as a blow to German militarism. The measure cites Lithuanians Finns Ukrainians Estonians and Lefts forming a committee to report actions to their groups.

Amsterdam June 6 The Berlin Vossische Zeitung military correspondent states a decision in the western front offensive can be obtained only slowly. It notes Germany’s railway system at Compiegne and Villers Cotterets aiding resistance while the German supreme command cannot move against the new offensive.
Viscount Bryce calls for unity between England and Ireland and backs Mrs. Max Green’s May appeal. He urges rapid passage of home rule and asks Ireland to align with Britain against Germany, noting historic English Irish tensions have eased.
American marines attacked German lines at dawn in the Chateau Thierry sector, advancing 3 kilometers on a four kilometer front and taking 100 prisoners while turning back German forces. French troops on the left took 160 prisoners as high ground near Chateau Thierry fell under Allied control.
General Pershing reports American and French troops moved their lines northwest of Chateau Thierry about a mile this morning. Prisoners were captured and enemy losses in killed and wounded were heavy amid active artillery combat.
