Reports from Santiago de Cuba say seventeen ships were sighted off Haiti as three vessels missing for provisions and munitions. The Haytian steamer Nouvelle Valdiregue reached Port-au-Prince and stated the US troopship Resolute, under convoy, was pursued between Jean Ravel and Mole St Nicholas but eluded capture.
A Barcelona dispatch reports a May 27 sighting of a Spanish squadron of three cruisers and three protected ships off Madagascar heading north. Two Lyceum Club members wager 50 000 dollars on its location Cuban waters or heading to the Philippines, for navy subscriptions. Cadiz reports the San Augustin from Santiago de Cuba reaching port without incident.
